Question about Dell Dimension 3000 PC Desktop

Anytime I plug something in to the USB port it give a error message that states, Power Surge on the USB port. What can I do to fix this?

    It may be possible that the device you're trying to use uses a rather large amount of power, and it needs a powered hub (with its own power supply), rather than a conventional USB port built into your PC or notebook. Please describe what kind of port you're using.

The USB device could be drawing more current than the USB port can supply or the USB port may be faulty.
Get a powered USB hub and plug it into your computer's USB port and then plug the USB devices into the powered USB hub.

Power Surge on USB Port

I'm assuming you're not using a hub but plugging directly into one of the USB ports on your laptop?

First, have you installed all current patches for your PC? I think this was a common error message that was hotfixed some time ago, so be sure your OS is up-to-date. If so, you could try to uninstall all USB ports in device manager, then restart. When your system is up, go to the first USB device and right-click, then turn off warning messages. This is just for the error message, you may have a problem with your Zen as well so try it on a different PC if possible but I'd do that when it's fully charged. You may need to do a hard reset (instructions in your manual) to get it to work but that may delete all of the Zen's contents, so that's a last resort.

unplug your mp3 player immediately!! it will fry your mp3 player if you leave it plugged in!! try adjusting the player's settings and seeing if there is somewhere to switch it from '1000mah' to '500mah' or lower. try that. if it still gives the error try a different usb port.

Western Digital Passport 160 GB external HD won't load.

WinXP SP2 blocks the use of the drive because it thinks it draws too much power. But there is a simple procedure to override this (from WD site):

"Problem:
Under Windows XP, an error message of "Power Surge on Hub Port" or "USB device has exceeded the power limits of it's hub port" is displayed when connecting a USB device to a USB port on a computer or Hub.

Cause:
Under some computers, USB devices are only allowed to draw a maximum of 500 milliamps (mA) per connection from the USB port on the computer system or from a USB hub. Under the Windows XP Operating System, with the release of Service Pack 2, if a device attempts to draw more than this (500 milliamps), a USB port balloon message is displayed to indicate this over current condition. When connecting a USB device that draws power from the USB bus, a very brief over current condition is sometimes detected by the OS, and the warning message is displayed.

Resolution:
This message has no affect on the functionality of the USB port. The USB hard drive should still function correctly on the USB port regardless of the error message. To prevent the USB Power Surge Alert message from displaying, please complete the following steps:
Click on Start.

Click on Control Panel.

Double-click on the System Icon.

Click on the Hardware Tab.

Click on the Device Manager button.

Click on the + next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers to expand the selection.

Right-click and select Properties on any listing that displays USB UNIVERSAL HOST CONTROLLER.

Click on the Advanced Tab.

Check the box that says: Don't tell me about USB errors."

This works fine, and the drive works fine afterwards. I suspect it actually draws less power than they say. Maybe it has a brief power draw spike on startup, but it's running power seems less. In any case, it works fine without the Y cable. I do think it is tacky that WD doesn't give the cable for free, since my $7 Sabrent 2.5" Hard drive enclosure came with a y cable.

But most likely the drive will work fine for you. It is a lovely quiet drive, and takes up no space at all.

Power surge

Connect the camera whilst it is switched off....then when you power on...it will ask if you want to connect via PC or bridge....if that still throws up power surge...you need to use a different cable as the power ballast on the cable is faulty.It is much easier to just use a card reader....cheap off eBay.

If it is the case, please try below solution:

 

SYMPTOMS

 

When you wake up a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer from hibernation or from standby, you may receive the following error message:

 

Power Surge on Hub Port: A USB Device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port. This error message is displayed even if there are no USB devices connected to the computer.   WORKAROUND loadTOCNode(1, 'workaround'); To work around this issue, disable the USB 2.0-enhanced host controller.

Note When you disable the USB 2.0-enhanced host controller, you lose USB 2.0 functionality. That is, you revert to USB 1.1 functionality.

To disable the USB 2.0-enhanced host controller, follow these steps: 1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Manage. 2. Under Computer Management (Local), click Device Manager. 3. In the Device Manager pane, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers. 4. Right-click the USB 2.0-enhanced host controller, and then click Disable.

Note The name of the USB 2.0-enhanced host controller may vary. 5. When you receive the confirmation message, click Yes. 6.

Close Device Manager.

Power surge on hub port error msg

The printer is the problem, obviously but, also try using a different USB cable to see if that doesn't help! When plugging up th cable, look for anything out of the ordinary! If changing the USB cable doesn't resolve the situation then it could be something shorted out in your printer and you need to take it to a service shop for repair! regards, babb
