I have a Maxtor personal Storage 3200 external Hard drive. The green light was on but my computer wasnt recognizing it anymore. I took in to a local office depot. They were able to get it to show up on...

Try the manufacturer's web-site: http://www.MAXTOR.com and see if their E-commerce site offers that part-number.
Or, given the part-number on the power-supply, do a search on eBay -- you'll probably find third-party "compatible" power-supplies.

Maxtor personal storage 3200 - flashing green light.

Solution:
First, disconnect the power cable from the back of the external hard drive:
If the power supply LED continues to blink:
  1. Connect the power supply to a different outlet (or instead of connecting to a power strip, connect directly to an outlet in the wall).

  2. If the power supply continues to blink after changing outlets, this indicates that the power supply is defective and needs to be replaced.

  3. If the power supply stays solid, then reconnect to the external hard drive and see if the drive spins.

I have tried to order replacement power cord 12 volts 2 amps for maxtor 3200.I haven't been able to find one.

Hi,

This is a common problem, most of the AC cords for these devices cannot be purchased seperately.

You have 2 basic options:

1. Purchased a used model of the same model # off eBay or a similar Auction site and use it's AC cord

2. Take the drive as is into your local computer store and purchase a new External drive caddy which will include it's own AC adapter(usually $30-$50) and ask their technicians to move you maxtor drive into the new caddy. There is one thing they will need to no, what type of HDD it is, SATA or IDE but if you do not know they will be able to tell as soon as they open the maxtor shell.

Either way you should be able to access all of your files, just a question of seeing which way will be cheaper and easier for you. I generally recommend the second method as the new shell will come with it's own warranty should something fail which used parts generally do not.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Power cord for maxtor 3200 external drive

The following site guarantees compatible replacement.
http://www.lcdpayless.com/productpage.php?productId=2511

I've been searching for a replacement as well. I found the specs on the original cord at the following site.
http://www.libertye-online.com/servlet/the-1642/new-APD-I.T.E.-POWER/Detail

12V, 2A, positive inner post, 2.5 inner diameter (ID) and 5.5 outer diameter (OD).

I don't think I would buy the exact replacement ADP brand fom the site above. Many have complained about it failing at the 2-yr point. I am considering the following replacement from the same website.
http://www.libertye-online.com/servlet/the-1218/new-Challenger-I.T.E.-POWER/Detail

NOTE: the input AC voltage range is different on this one, but it should still work in the USA.

There are other options on ebay.
http://electronics.shop.ebay.com/AC-DC-12-Volt-/88758/i.html?_npmv=3

Let us know if anyone has specific success with any of these or others.

External Hard Drive problem - Why God!? Why!!?

sure..the power is not the key issue..what you might consider, is calling a local computer fix it shop, and ask how much to recover that data..then, you may be well advised to consider an online back utility, such as you can find here.
