Turn the printer on.
Lift the lid that covers the print-head mechanism.
Sometimes, there are INSTRUCTIONS printed on the inside of the lid.
Or, just wait 10 seconds, and the print-head will "slide" to a position from where you can "unlock" the ink-cartridge from its socket, and gently lift it out.
I have a CX9400Fax and occassionally print is mixed/missing lines. You must do a Cleaning cycle usually at least 4-6 times or until it prints a clear pattern. It will use LOTS of ink during the cleaning cycle. The printer normally uses a lot of ink, my solution was to purchase a CISS system along with a Waste Ink Container. IMO the best CISS is sold by the company below. I did have to call for tech support once and they returned my call in 30 minutes, problem solved and never came back. I purchase refill ink and it seems that I do a lot less cleaning cycles.
Generic carts are sometimes not recognized. Epson's chips are the cause. I solved this problem for a small investment. I purchased a CISS system for about $75.00 [ink included], that's the cost of OEM carts that do not last very long. The CX9400Fax is an Ink Hog, which is why the printer is so cheap. If you want a CISS go to http://www.inkproducts.com/ink-store/ They are great if you need help and will call you back in less than an hour. Get the Waste Ink Kit when ordering the CISS.
Unless you are printing a lot in that color, my Epson Stylus photo color R300 uses black at about twice the rate as the color ones. Most packages or ink, I find, also come with two black and one of every color. All my color ones seem to emply at approximately the same time as the others.
If you already have tried reseating all of the inks and and inks are still not recognized, Please contact Epson tech support for a replacement ink or if they find out after some diagnostics that it is the printer that is having an issue they would be replacing your printer.
