If your older model TV has red and white plugs on the back of it that say something like "Audio Out" or "Output" then YES.

Simply connect a pair of RCA Cables (available any electronics store) from the Audio Out jacks on your tv to the "AUX" input on your stereo.

You cannot power speakers without some kind of stereo/receiver.

If you do have a receiver then you can connect to your "TV INPUT" on the back of your receiver and control the tv volume with your receiver remote.

If your tv does not have those red and white output jacks then there is no practical way for you to connect your speakers.

When hooking up HDMI why can I not get sound I hooked the HDMI from the cable box to the reciver and from the reciver to the TV I assinged the Hdmi and I get picture on the Tv I also can get sound out of...

I have researched on your issue and found that the Receiver is not capable of processing audio from HDMI input. It will bypass the signals from its HDMI input to HDMI output..
The Receiver has 3 HDMI input and one output. Hence you can use this as a HDMI switch to connect three HDMI devices to single HDMI port on the TV.
In order to get the sound from speakers connected to the Receiver, it is required to make alternate digital or analog audio connection.
You can confirm the information from the manual of the Home Theater System. Please refer page # 36 of the Manual to get the information. I have provided a link where you can download the Manual for the HT System:

I was listing to my stero and it said protector and I cannot get my big speakers to work, its an older onkyo 857c 120v 60hz 3.6a and there is no reset button

Disconnect the speakers and see what it does. If you were playing it very loud just prior to the failure it possibly overheated or blew up a speaker.

Make/model and any other clues you know would be VERY helpful.

SPEAKERS

Go to your tv manufacturer's website to get instructions/manual.

Warning: make sure your TV has an audio OUT or OUTPUT, or you will not be able to hook stereo directly to TV and get it to work.

Factory stero to amp

If the amplifier has inputs for a high level signal, you unhook the wires going into the speaker and plug them into the amp, then hook the outputs up to the speakers. If the amp only has rca inputs, you need to also buy a line level converter. Then you unhook the speakers, hook the wires up the the converter, then hook the converter up to the amp, then hook the amp up to the speakers.
