Before we replaced the ignitor would take a long time to reach temperature & there was a smell of gas. We replaced the ignitor and now it is not coming on at all.

Hello. To go 12 years without issues is excellent. Now however you will have to make a decision to repair or replace. Be sure to get a firm estimate before you repair and compare that to the cost of replacement.

here is what may be causing your problem:

Usually when an oven won't bake, it's because the bake igniter is weak or burned out. The igniter is a small, round or rectangular device, that's about 1 inch by 4 to 8 inches. It's near the burner itself.

The burner is the tube-type device the gas flows through before it's ignited. It has many small holes on the sides to let the gas, when ignited, form a long, low flame. If the igniter is weak, if it glows red but doesn't get hot enough, or if it's burned out, the gas doesn't flow to the burner and the burner won't ignite. If this is the problem, you may need to replace either the igniter or the gas safety valve. Usually the igniter is to blame.

Other causes Other reasons that your oven may not bake are:

  • The clock settings are incorrect (if you have timed baking or a self-cleaning oven).

  • The thermostat is defective.

  • The safety valve that prevents accidental gas flow is defective.

  • The selector switch is defective.

My Gemini double oven needs to heated to 550 degrees before the broiler will ignite. I've been dealing with this for years. How can I fix this issue? Jim

Hi,
This repair you had done was to repair and prevent the door to the upper oven from building with gas as the broiler was know to do. This was a safety issue for the time period UL required. You can select the low broiler to speed up you preheat time but there is no known fix to by-pass this mode. Sorry for the bad news, good luck

Oven not igniting

Very common problem, the ignitor or glow coil heats up but no gas comes out. For me for the last 12 years this repair has always been a weak ignitor. Call your parts store with the model number and check prices on the exact part and on any generic ignitors for this unit. Replace the ignitor and this should do the job. This can be a bad valve not letting the gas through, but again I have never seen that and I replace 4-6 ignitors a week. Good Luck, Appliance Specialists.

Gas oven makes a fluttering sound when pre-heating and cooking

This is most often due to the ignitor bar aging. With time it draws less current and does not hold the regulator valve open all the way. You can confirm that the regulator is OK if the broiler works. Replacement for nearly all of these ovens is a universal part, about $35 at appliance parts stores, takes 5-15 minutes to change (depending on whether you need to pull the oven out to get to the connector).
