If it is a F500, it is a common fault with the series. The manufacturers warranty was increased to 2 years, and the wifi is covered. The motherboard will need to be replaced, so give HP a ring, or contact the store that you bought it from, and they should be able to help.
If you know you installed the right driver and you know for sure that the device manager is showing no signs of the wireless card then the motherboard is probably bad.
To verify this, put another wireless card into the slot, if the system doesn't pick up on the 2nd card then that slot on the motherboard is bad meaning the motherboard would have to be replaced.

im having the same exact issues. i called hp and told them im having the same probs as everyone else online. they said that cant be because they fixed it before mine was made but would be happy to troubleshoot it for me for a bunch of money. he tried to blame it on vista. i told him thats impossible because i restored to factory settings, turned off updates, did NOT connect to the internet and restarted the computer and same prob again with the broadcom card not showing up on device manager. the guy was a *****. these are pos notebooks. just dont buy it. waste of money.
