I have my simple tech set to back up personal docs every day. This works fine. However, when I attempt to back up the entire HD to SimpleTech, it begins ok then stops before completed. One time it stopped at 4%. Yesterday it got to 99% and stopped. I thought it was backing up entire HD (full system back up) once a month but have discovered it isn't happening. Plese help! S.

Double check all the power options on your PC to make sure it is not set to go to sleep or hibernate or any other process that may interrupt the backup itself.

Also make sure there is enough space to back up to.

Make sure that the interface you use to connect also has any power saving turned off.

Many devices have the option of going to sleep or turning off to save power and you would need to check the full properties of your usb or firewire card to check that.

Make sure your antivirus or any other application is not set to scan or run during the same time interval as your backup

when you have checked all that you may find that it now works as it should.

It's not a 'charging lead' as the unit has no battery. It is a Power Adapter that delivers 12 volts to run the HD Motor the same as if it was in a computer. You can get them on Amazon for around $15.

Simple Tech HD failing- takes 4 hours to tranfer 512 MB!?

Not exactly a solution but I have had the same problem with one of these Simple Tech Signature Mini 320's for a while. Real finicky. Will only be recognized on direct connected to MB USB ports and even then with Win 7 or XP I get the "This USB device can perform faster if you connect it to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port." no matter what ports I connect it to. While having this issue on this "main" computer I have previously connected it to some other computer (don't remember which, now) and it connected at 2.0 speed. What's going on??

I have a SimpleTech SimpleDrive STI-USB235 160

Yes, you should turn the HD off when not in use. The direct drive mechanism is constantly turning when current is applied. Turning off the unit will preserve it. Four years is quite a long time for a hard drive and may need replacement soon.

COMPUTER DOES NOT RECOGNIZED SIMPLETECH EXTERNAL HD

Hi,

This generally means you have a hardware failure in the drive or enclosure. The simplest way to test which is to have a hardware tech move the drive into a new enclosure and see if it works.

This will void your warranty if you do it, so, if the drive is under warranty and there are no files you consider valuable on the drive, call the manufacturer for warranty support.

If you value the data more than the drive is worth then take it to your local hardware vendor and ask them to test the hard drive in a new enclosure. Good odds it will work this way but if not you may need the help of a data recovery specialist.

In North America I use Armor-IT, if you are in a different region and the new enclosure fails to garner results, comment back with your region(Country, State, City) and I will supply you with the closest reputable facility.

Simpletech hard drive not working

I have that problem similiar to yours. My simple tech stopped working for like two years so i decided to open up my simple tech and removed my HD away from the old enclosure so I can try building my own external hard drive for the first time. I bought another new 3.5 enclosure, IDE/ATA for the old HD. I put it in the new enclosure and it worked!

It's the only solution you can have. No need to retrieve data or re-format your HD. You can leave it the way you like...if you wanna reformat it...up to you.

Solution was to do nothing. I was working in the CPU and wanted to back the HD in case the HD was damaged and/or data lost. I did the work and everything turned out okay.

Acer aspire 5050 freezes when external HD plugged-in

if the simple tech is still in warranty I would return it to the seller as not compatible with your computer you want to use it on.
otherwise you could reference the acer faq to see if this is a driver issue.
Another possibility is to see if the fire wire card has updated drivers*(I assume that is the port you are using?) and you could also get a fire wire to usb converter. or try changing the connection on the simple tech a slower serial speed, this may be the trade off to use this item.

Problems

One thing to remember is the some of the Simple drives requires the USB mini to conect to the drive and the TWO USB connects to be plugin to the computer.
