After engine shuts down I cannot pull the starter cord due to excessive resistence. Take out spark plug and engine turns over easily. Put plug back in and engine starts easily, runs for a minute then sputters and shuts down. I'm back to square one. What's wrong?
Well would you believe that I have the very same problem. I suspected that the pump was seizing up, so we tried the pump on another unit and it worked fine. On inspection of the motor we found the cam (which also operates the decompression mechanism) was worn out. It's made of hard plastic. It is only about 7 dollars too, so cheap enough to fix. I have mine ordered now and feel pretty confident that that should fix it.

I have a Porter cable PCH 2401,Mine starts up fine and can use it for 5 mins.but when it's in idle it starts to load down and stall outs the motor.Tried to start it and it was very hard to pull felt like pump might be sezied, removed water suppply and motor started fine ,bit notice the pump was very hot.It as a thermal relief valve on it,shouldn't it release when the pump get to a dangerious themperature and release the pressure circulating within the pump itself.Would this be a defective valve.

Sorry mrfixit-jerr, but this seems like a canned answer for just about any PW problem. I eliminated most of your suggestions that I could without success. Why does taking the spark plug out temporarily eliminate the "cannot turn over" problem? It has to have something to do with the engine and/or starting decompression parts.
