Question about Broadcom Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a 54g MaxPerformance 802.11g adapter which came with my compaq presario. My wireless network worked with WEP but won't with this computer using WPA2. I think I need to update the driver. Which one do I need? Thanks.

I do not believe that updating the driver for your network card will solve the problem, although you should always install the newest one for best operation. You can go to Compaq's support page here and see if there is an update available for your model.

If WEP worked for you and WPA doesn't, then it is an encryption problem. Encryption happens on a different layer than the driver, which simply makes your Operating System work with your hardware.

If you are running Windows XP SP1 or SP2, update the operating system to XP Service Pack 3 for best WPA/WPA2 support.

XP Service Pack 1 computers do not support WPA by default and cannot support WPA2. To upgrade an XP SP1 computer to support WPA (but not WPA2), either

  • install the "Windows XP Support Patch for Wi-Fi Protected Access" (link) from Microsoft, or
  • upgrade the computer to XP SP2
XP Service Pack 2 computers by default support WPA but not WPA2. To upgrade an XP SP2 computer to also support WPA2, install the "Wireless Client Update for Windows XP SP2" (link) from Microsoft.

If you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.

I have a compaq presario r4000 will no longer connect to wireless after installing a netgear router

Some later model wireless routers have the Password(ie.Encryption key) and the SSID already configured in the wireless router andthis information is printed on a label on the bottom of the router.
These settings can be used to configure the wireless card and wireless adaptersin your computer/laptop.
If these settings do not suit you, then it can be changed to suit yourrequirements.
The encryption key secures your data and wireless connection from unauthorizedaccess. To configure the wireless settings in the router, connect a LAN cablefrom your computer to the wireless router, then open a Browser on your computerand enter the router's configuration IP address, then enter the admin login andpassword and then go to the wireless settings and configure the SSID and Encryptionkey.
The router's encryption key can be a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA or WPA2key.If you use the Passphrase method select either WEP or WPA or WPA2 togenerate the encryption key. You can enter the WEP or WPA or WPA2 key with 8 to63 ASCII characters or 64 Hex digits.
Most people use Passphrase which is easier to remember eg. I was born inJanuary 1988.
The strongest and latest security is WPA2, the weakest and oldest is WEP. To connect to your wireless router from the computer/laptop,configure the wireless card in your computer/laptop with the router's wirelesssettings ie SSID, plus the WPA or WPA2 encryption key. Then computer/laptopscan communicate with your wireless router.http://www.fixya.com/support/r10267861-network_security_key

I was able to connect to my HP Compaq Presario V2000 Laptop to my WiFi Network using NetGear. When I reconfigured the network I could connect to all other network like Dell Lptop , Nokia Smart Phone and HP...

Hi!

Your Compaq V2000 has an Intel Pro Wireless 2200 BG wireles adapter. (doesn't support N, but that's not the point I think)

If your new network configuration is based on WPA/WPA2 encyption, this adapter has some known problems to establish a connection. It works great with WEP, but not so well with WPA.
Sometimes the issue can be solved by installing the latest versions of drivers and software for the wireless adapter.
If it still doesn't work, a known workaround is to disable via device manager all other network adapters in the computer (ethernet adapter), leaving active only the Intel Pro 2200 wireless adapter.

Hope it helped,

Bogdan

What will i download because i want to install wireless connection for internet in my compaq laptop

You will need to buy a wireless USB device for your laptop unless your model has a WLAN already on the mobo.

I suggest either a Netgear or Belkin 54g thet will come with drivers and if you know your WEP key for your wireless enabled router the rest is easy just search for available networks find you SSID and input the WEP code.

My Wireless adapter is not shown on my computer .I have A Presario F700 that works perfect except this glich.I have gone to Network and Sharing and it shows my home and work Ethernet connection but NO...

You need to check if your wireless adapter is on by going to device manager and looking for wireless adapter etc, assuming you are using a windows o/s. You also need to check if you have switch on the adapter manually as many laptop provide a button or manual key to put it off for power efficiency reasons..Hope this helps and rate my answer. Thanks

Wireless network is not connecting

There is not a lot of information to work with here. First of all, the computer is a desktop. Do you have a PCI or USB wireless card installed? You need a wireless network adapter in order to access your wireless.

Next, do you have a wireless router? If not, you need one to provide something for the wireless clients to connect to. If you do, you need to take note of the SSID, or wireless network name. This is the name that the Compaq desktop will be connecting to (with it's wireless network adapter.

In regards to the router, did you setup WEP or WPA wireless encryption? If so, Windows will ask for the key or passphrase to connect to your network and must be typed in identically to how it was setup in your router.

Something else to consider, if you do use WPA for encryption, some older wireless cards do NOT support it and if you insist on using encryption, use WEP.

Hope this helps!

Wireless-G USB adapter doesn't work on W98-SE

If you're sure that you're typing the correct key on the correct place you can try setting a static ip, subnet , gateway and dns server on it.
