Question about Brother MFC 420CN All-In-One InkJet Printer
The yellow one first:
http://www.fixya.com/support/t276232-cartridge_not_recognized
For the BK one:
make sure that all carts are placed well and are secured.
Press menu then start mono (blue button) then fourtimes arrow-up (tel-index). machine will be in maintenance mode. press 7 then 6 then 4 then start mono. machine will initialize the carts and refresh the ink within the tubes and the ph. It does some cleaning too. Leave maintenance afterwards by pressing 9 then 9. Run a quality test print by pressing ink etc.
If you still have trouble with bk this part of the ph is clogged due to generic ink (pigments).
BTW the nozzles have a micro filter infront. generic ink will clogg the filter. Use only dye-ink for all brother printers!!
Best resolutions will be achieved with original ink wich cleans the ph, too!

Compatible carts do make a lot of trouble. One point is the draining! The ink has flown into the cart assy and beyond that to the bottom of the printer. As long as you can print without problems you dont have to do anything. If the test pages wont show the correct color you have to open the printer and to clean the assy and the bottom.
Do use original ink carts though these wont drain and give correct info to printer. You can very simple refill them with dye ink. Dye ink only!!!
