All projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video or dead set) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. In some cases the TV will also not show any video. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

The convergnce amplifiers have failed.
This is a common old-age problem.
This requires replacing the convergence amplifiers and possibly resistors and fuses. A repair shop would charge $300-$400 to repair.
If you are tech savy or know someone who is, thae parts will cost around $40.00. Search this site for specific instructions.

You have a problem with convergence and all you may need to do is replace a fuse. Look up convergence for your tv model and hopefully you will get an answer as to where the fuse is located and how to replace it. Very common for RCA tv's

tHIS is a convergence problem.. first question if you go into the customer setup menu. is the convergence option listed? If you have not got that option i suggest you read "the fl231 problem in the tips and trick section of this website. this can be a simple inexpensive repair..if you do have the convergence option then it can be one of three diffrent boards convergence power, convergence amp or small signal board. and will need further trouble shooting

that model doesnt use the two STK ICs that most other models use. Try replaceing fusw fl231 . The schematics arent easially available for any RCA TVs unless they are the older projection ones. I would recommend checking with this link and seeing if they have the service manual or perhaps they can get it, if you leave an email with your model number.
