Re: viewfinder on digital camcorder doesn't work
Apparently this same problem exists on many different models. I have a JVC grd72u. I called JVC @ 800-252-5722. I selected the "Corrective Action Program" prompt from the automated attendent. I spoke to a customer service rep. They are aware of the problem and are fixing it for free, but only until 12/31/07. I suggest you call ASAP and get your name in the computer. If the problem is something besides the CCD sensor, they will call you with the estimate to repair.

It could be either aperture is stuck or ccd imager chip is defective in your camcorder that will be replaced. In bright light, look into camera lens, turn ON in camera mode and observe does aperture open like an eye? If you notice some thing opens right in center of camcorder lens then aperture is working and ccd imager chip is bad that will be replaced. Let me know model number of your Sony camcorder to provide you ccd imager part number info. Thanks.
I HAD THIS PROBLEM ERROR CODE C31 : 22 WOULD COME UP AND TRV 118 CAM WOULD NOT WORK. I TRIED EVERYTHING TILL ONE DAY I BANGED IT ON A CARPETED FLOOR ON THE BOTTOM OF THE CAMCORDER 5 TIMES QUITE HARD. THEN THE CAM WORKED JUST FINE! MY CAM HADN'T WORKED FOR OVER 7 MONTHS. NOW I HAVE IT BACK. HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE.

each of these steps represents a possible solution to this issue, check

Ensure the lens cap on the front of the camcorder has been removed.
Ensure a fully-charged battery is inserted in the camcorder.
Ensure the STANDBY/LOCK switch is set to the STANDBY position.
Turn on the camcorder and set it to the CAMERA mode.
Look to see if an image can be seen in the viewfinder or LCD.
Some camcorders have both a viewfinder and LCD. To conserve power, the
viewfinder and LCD will not display at the same time. To use the
viewfinder, the LCD must be closed.
Could easily be one of those picofuse which is a miniature fuse. Looks more like a small metal film resistor, except without the coloured bands.
But SMD in Camcorders has now got so damm small, you cannot use a hot air tool without the risk of other parts moving, or loosing..
basically a Digital Camcorder has all the electronics of a PC mother board, shrunk into a small hand device, and also included a tape loading mechanism
and a lens unit..
So I would suggest that you will get in touch with the JVC service agent, and see if they can extend the warranty, sometimes they will cover the Parts , but you will
have to cover the labour..
