My freezer can you help me my freezer is 12 months old and it has stopped working it still runs but all my stuff was defrosting

  • librarylady2 Dec 21, 2007

the freezer is running, the temp has been turned down, we've made sure the door is closed properly but the items on the top two shelves are defrosting--especially the top shelf. Bottom two shelves seem to be fine so far. Items in the door are also defrosting.

Be sure your cords in the back are plugged in, and you shut the door completely, if you move the freezer to check if it's plugged in, don't pass out when you see all the lint!

Freezer wont go below -9 degrees

This information does not mean anything to us if you didn't specify the model. In what temperature range a freezer works we knew thanks to the stars.
One star (-6 degrees centigrade) is perfect for making ice cubes and is sufficiently cold to keep food for three or four days.
** Two stars (-12 degrees centigrade) stores food for fifteen to twenty days.
*** Three stars (-18 degrees centigrade) will keep food safe for up to three months.
**** Four stars (below 18 degrees centigrade) means that the compartment provides the ideal conditions for freezing down fresh and pre-cooked foods.

it is not defrosting. timer ,element , limit switch maybe issue. find defrost timer advance it see if compressor and fan quit running. when you advance this it should start defrost mode, which turns on the heater, which stays on till limit switch opens or timer advances, most are on 12 hour cycles

Freezer just stopped working

Is this a frost free freezer? If it is, and the compressor and refrigerant is good, the problem probally lies with the defrost timer. What the defrost timer does, at regular intervals, typically every 12 hours, shuts down the compressor and powers up a defrost coil to melt any frost that has built up on the cooling coils inside the freezer. It probally the small square box that you mentioned. Some have a hole where you can turn the cam to the timer and that should switch the power from the defrost coil to the compressor.

Hope this helps.

Ice builup on back wall of top mount whirlpool freezer

It sounds like it is not defrosting. Could be the heater, terminator, or the defrost timer. There is still ice built up behind the wall and won't take long for it to stop working again.

Frigidaire Ultrafreeze upright just stopped working

It sounds as if your compressor it's running. This could be a bad compressor, bad capacitor, bad thermostat. See that there are no fans or defrost, it is one of the other. I would start with checking the capacitor. You can replace it with a Supco 3 in 1. It cost around $30.00. Anything else is going to start costing $100.00 and more. If you need a freezer that big, I would have it fixed unless it ends up being the compressor.

Freezer won't start after defrost cycle

It might be the timer motor, if it doesn't run. neither does the timer. Easily replaceable and cheap. good luck. John

Takes weeks to freeze

If you freezer has a defrost timer it should have done the defrost on its own. Only the very old freezers had to be defrosted manually. If it continues to stop cooling or you already haven't had the timer replaced or the defrost elements checked let me know.
