This model is already Region Free for DVDs but only Region A (in most cases) for Blu Rays and can't be changed. You can buy a version of this which is sometimes called BDP550 which is Region Free for DVDs and Blu Rays.
For remote control concerns. You can try to reset your remote control but be shure before you reset your remote your tv should be unplugged from the power outlet. So here are the 4 steps to reset your remote:
1. remove the batteries,
2. press and hold the number 1 button of the remote control, thus draining all the remaining electricity.
3. put the batteries back in.
4. plug the tv on the power outlet then turn the tv on and try the remote control.
Now if these steps do not work check the warranty of the tv and have your remote be replaced if it's under warranty and if not you can try to purchase a universal remote control that supports RCA tv's.
The word Hack gives an impression of illegality, however the term is used in error for what is a series of remote button pressing to unlock the players potential. Sources are freely distributed by the very people who make the units. Now this model I have found is the basics of a Phillips model 610. So here is the unlock sequences..

My remote is not working. When I press a button, I get the following message on my unit: U12, U30, SET #, CHK REMOTE #, or RC #. What can I do to fix this?
The message displayed means that the remote control and unit are not communicating and the remote needs to be programmed. To program the remote, press and hold the same number that is displaying on the unit and the [ENTER] or [OK] button for more than 2 seconds. For example, if the unit displays “SET 2”, press and hold [2] and [ENTER] or [OK] for more than 2 seconds.
The remote control and main unit are factory-set to “REMOTE 1” mode. If your remote control affects other equipment during operation, you can switch to operate in “REMOTE 2” mode. To switch to “REMOTE 2” mode 1 While pressing and holding [AUX] on the main unit Press and hold [2] until “REMOTE 2” appears on the main unit display. 2 Press and hold [ENTER] and [2] for at least 2 seconds. The main unit and remote control are now set to operate in “REMOTE 2” mode. To return to “REMOTE 1” mode Do steps 1 and 2 above but use [1] instead of [2] for both steps. (“REMOTE 1” appears on the main unit during step 1.) The remote control cannot work with the main unit if their modes are different. “REMOTE 1” or “REMOTE 2” appears on the main unit display when you operate the remote control. If “REMOTE 1” appears (The main unit is in “REMOTE 1” mode.) Press and hold [ENTER] and [1] on the remote control for at least 2 seconds. If “REMOTE 2” appears (The main unit is in “REMOTE 2” mode.) Press and hold [ENTER] and [2] on the remote control for at least 2 seconds.
Look into your manual that came with your dvd recorder for DMR-E80H, Page 46, Changing the Remote Control Code. My child played with a remote control as well and reconfigured it as well. In the manual, you have explanation how to configure your remote control again to work.
