Two questions for ya:

A) When you say USB drive, do you mean an external CDROM, DVDROM, or mechanical HARD DRIVE or do you mean a FLASH DRIVE? (see below)

B) When you say "NOT WORKING" do you mean that when you plug it into ANY USB port, you get an error tone; you don't get any response; you see the drivers being loaded, but no drive appears; you see the drive appear, but no files are listed on the drive; or something else?

From these two questions, we will be much more able to help.

NOTE:
External devices that have mechanical moving parts, like CD and DVD drives often require external power sources in order for the drive to function. Even external hard drives can require a separate power source. This is because the small amount of electricity provided by the USB port is not enough to power the motors inside these external devices.

Another type of external storage medium is called a "Flash Drive". It is like a hard drive in so much as it stores data and appears in your explorer/Finder window like a hard drive. However, there are no moving parts, so it never requires an external power source.

My external pc drive stopped working.i under stand the Head is broken, I want to retrive important data from it. External drive is a Ministation {Buffalo} P{lease help,

You should try mounting the hard disk internally since any external HDD is actually a normal HDD in a SATA to USB enclosure. If that doesn't work , you should try finding recovery experts in your area but that might be expensive!

Retriving Data from Storejet and uploading to new computor

If the hard drive in the IBM laptop is OK then remove the hard drive from this laptop. Connect this hard drive to an USB hard drive adapter then connect the USB adapter with the hard drive into the USB port on the Vaio laptop. The Vaio laptop should see it as an external storage device (if the hard drive is OK). You can then open the various folders and files then copy these to the Vaio laptop

Thank you for your reply. I wneed to retrive material from my hard drive and favorites list. What is the best way to do this?

Remove the hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapterand then plug this adapter into a working computer's USB port. The computer sees this as an USB mass storage device (external hard drive) and youcan open the various folders and files, then you can backup your data.

My external harddrive does not work after I dropped it

Unfortunately, that probably means it is damaged beyond help.

If the only problem is a damaged connector, like the USB port, then you could remove the drive and use and external USB adapter to continue using it. Or at least retrive your data.

MT Hd just has a green flickering light now and dose not work with my computer how do i make it work again or retrive my data off it

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

My Toshiba HDD2171 has stopped working. I have connected it to my Desktop PC with a IDE connector. It fails to be recognised. What can I try to retrive my data.

If you tried to setup the hard drive as a slave drive and it didn't work then you might try this, but I think it you will have much success.
Connect the hard drive to an USB hard drive adapter and then plug this into the USB port of a working computer. If this computer detects it as an external storage device and you can open the folders and files then you are in luck.
If not then there are companies that can recover data from faulty hard drives, BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.
