When I push the intercom buttom and then the button to the extension I am hoping to "buzz", nothing happens. Also, the button with his name on it does not light up indicating that he is on the phone. The phone is an Avaya 34D Partner System.

This message means that the system does not see a telephone connected to that extension. Check the extension that you are calling to see if it is operational. Check the extension number by using Feature *0 and pressing the intercom button.
If you want to know the extensions number of your phone of any information about the programed feature on any button you just click on feature (button with nortel logo) then * then 0 then the button and it will give the information about the button. For extension you should use the intercom button which is normally last button on the buttom of your rigth hand side.
while the handset is hung up (without pressing the intercom button) press the "MESSAGE" button, on the display it should show ~why~ the message light is on (cause it is possible someone tried to intercom you, then hit the wrong button) after that you can turn off your light by pressing: 1) INTERCOM 2) 700 3) *your extension #*
it is possible that the extension that turned on your message light is no longer in service, making it an invalid extension
When you intercom the extension, insert a STAR ("*") before the extension number.
EX: Dial intercom 12, will ring 12. Dial intercom*12, will page the phone and go straight to speakerphone.
IF the far end user has their "MIC/HFAI" button lit, they will need to do nothing, they can just talk. IF not, they will need to lift the handset, OR, press the "MIC/HFAI" button, to be head.
Press an intercom button and dial the 2 digit extension number. This will ring the extension.
To page the extension, press an intercom button and then * (Star) and the 2 digit extension number. This will page the phone.
1 No DSL on the line
2. Set the intercom extension of the second phone
By default, both have been assigned ext 11. The intercom uses the same frequencies as a DSL line to transmit, so that could be the noise you are hearing.
Page 23 tells you how to set the intercom extension, and the DSL warning is almost at the bottom of every page from 18-22.
If you program that button to ba a DSS button for that station (41) it will intercom that station, can be used to transfer calls to that station, and will light up when it's busy. It could be called something else in programming like Station Intercom Button, Quick Transfer Key, etc..
Problem is, your phone can be used on many different Avaya phone systems that all program differently.
The manuals for the phones and systems are all available free at www.avaya.com but you need to know which system you have before looking for the manual.
Yes, you just need to program those buttons on your phone. Press "feature" then "redial" then press the button you want to program, then press "1" then it's extension # (example: 1-0-0 to program the button for extension 100) then press "feature". After you've programmed those extensions, the intercom should work.
