What engine?
General rule, have 6 quarts available. Put in 4 quarts, check level. If still low, add quart. Start engine, run for a minute. Stop, re-check oil level and fill to point on dipstick.
If you changed your filter it should be 5. Put 4 qts in, start the vehicle and let it run a few minutes, shut it down and wait a few minutes then check the dipstick and add as needed.

You need to Put at least 5 1/2 Quarts. Filter would consume around half and Quart and 5 would go in the pan.It should not exceed 6 Quarts.
Let me know, if needed further assistance.

Hi michelle2551,providing the oil dipstick is the right one for your car then if it reads 1/2 qrt low it should be topped up typically when an oil change is performed and the car is started it will fill the oil filter therefore appearing a little low, it may read full initially but once it is run and shutoff it reads low follow the manufacturers oil level indicator and top it up hope this helps good luck
