I have a samsung R700 lap top, the screen has been going dark within about 5 minutes of switching the pc on. I tried the download as suggested on this site last night, which seemed to fix the problem. However this morning I have the same problem again. As always the lap top it just out of the one year warranty. Does anyone have any other suggestions on what I can do.

on the bottom left of the keyboard find the key marked FN indicated in blue, hold it down then look at all the other keys that are indicated in blue.all these apply when holding down the FN key. i.e volume, wireless, sleep etc..find the key with the little picture of the sun on it then tap it until the screen brightens up. did this work let me know?

i thought it mite help if i explained what i think is the problem then maybe you mite remember what could have gone wrong. it sounds like it's your graphics card drivers have changed that's why it's bright when you first switch it on, it takes about 10 seconds for the boot sequence to get to the graphics card settings in the boot up list. so these must have been changed or moved at some point, for example i use NVIDIA graphics software in order to run two monitors & the icon for this is displayed in the system tray after about 10 seconds of the boot up. check to see if yours does the same. there is one other way to change these settings & that is to go into the BIOS settings.

Samsung TV half the screen goes black or dark. ... My samsung 40" - 14 months old does this on the top half of the screen. .. ****** 12 month ...
Have you done any Graphics updates? Resolution changes? Have you tried a system restore to a date before this issue. OR, in safe mode open MSCONFIG and Check your Boot selection. Normal Boot. This may help: http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/model/NP-R700-AS05DE-downloads
Right click on the desktop. Click on properties, then screen saver. Under power setting you will able to determine when and how the power is programmed.
That cannot be repaired as the screen on your notebook has layers and between those layers gas is compressed within thin columns. In your case your screen got a minute leak in one of the columns and now that column is unable to produce image. Hence, It can't be repaired. You have to change the entire screen.
I had this issue with my r700 last week. It can be resolved without any hardware changes/fixes (if you have the same issue which it does sound like).
Samsung are aware of this issue and have released a firmware upgrade for the system BIOS in order to implement a resolution to this monitor flicker problem.
Resources Visit the following webpage - http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/download/supportDown.do?group=&type=notebookcomputers&subtype=rseries&model_nm=NP-R700&disp_nm=NP-R700&language=&cate_type=all&dType=D&mType=FM&vType=&prd_ia_cd=05010400&model_cd=&menu=download
Instructions 1.download the file listed 2.double click on the file once downloaded to install the update
Additional Something you and other r700 users may find useful is that the r700 is known as the np-r700 on the Samsung website-there are lots of useful downloads and guides available there.
If you are running with XP try switching the unit on and pressing F8 while the computer is booting up
This should put you into Safe Mode
If that works go to Start , Accessories, System Tools ,System Restore and if the shop did the right thing when they built it you will have the System Restore function running
Ask the machine to do a System Restore and it should give you a number of dates to restore to, pick on that is a few days before the last update and let it roll
You could have a bad "inverter" or flourescent backlight tube, or a problem in your power supply. The only way to isolate the problem is to check each component in sequence. If your hard disk and DVD / CD drive are still working when your screen goes dark, then I'd say it's the "inverter". You'll have to take it to a repair shop.
