Temporarily you can hold the lid closed with your hand and press play and leave the lid after it loads the disc. But for permanent solutuion you will require to repair its lid switches,
Sounds very much like you have a either a dirty laser, or a laser unit failure. Put a cleaning disc through the machine, and see if it improves. If not, then you need to either have a new laser fitted, or a new machine.
I WENT BACK LATER, ROTATED THE DISC ABOUT HALF A TURN AND IT LOADED. TOOK IT OUT PUT ANOTHER IN AND IT LOADED JUST FINE ALSO. MAYBE IT WILL KEEP WORKING OK.
If it plays everything except HD DVDs, then the player needs to have it's software updated. Not sure how this is done. You may have to contact the manufacturer, or return it to the store you bought it from.
If it has problems playing all discs, then the laser may be dirty or out of alignment.
Buy a cd/dvd cleaner and try it. These are simply discs that have a little area on them that you put a drop of cleaning solution and then insert into the player.
If you are mechanically inclined, you can try opening up the player and using some rubbing alcohol on a Qtip to clean the laser lens (if it is accessible).
