My daughter's ACER Aspire 3680 laptop DVD/CD drive stopped working after an attempt to install a printer driver. Device Manager for the drive, under General, says "windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing (code 31).
I'm going to google for a driver, and see if I can fix by updating the driver.
If there is another/better fix, I'd appreciate it.

I am trying to burn a movie to a Maxell DVD+RW and my CRX880A won't even recognize that there is any sort of CD in the drive. When I go into Computer, it does not register that any sort of CD is in. I only have this problem with blank CD's. Windows Media and Nero do not allow me to burn since... well, they don't think there is a DVD RW in the drive.

I have a new Acer laptop, I cannot burn with cd or dvd, it keeps asking me to insert a cd or dvd, it cannot read it.

I am trying to burn my backup for the pc and it shows optiarc cd-rw crx880A as a cd or dvd to be inserted.

Does it mean I have to buy that type of dvd?

Found a solution on another site that seems to work (it's all gobblygook to me, but it gave us back access to the drive)
It requires editing the registry, so back the registry up first (create a system restore point too).
SOLUTION
locate and remove 2 registry values (the lower filters and upper filters) by following these trails in the registry as follows:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE then SYSTEM then CURRENTCONTROLSET then CONTROL then CLASS then {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} then in the right frame highlight LOWERFILTERS and delete, then highlight UPPERFILTERS and delete. The exit the registry, and reboot the laptop.
THANKS to JerryK at http://forums.driverguide.com for this solution.

My optiarc cd crx880a ata device is not working it is not reading any disc

Most probably your Sony optiarc cd crx880a could be defective. If warranty period is still valid, go back to your vendor for a warranty claims.

FYI - Optical drives never require a driver on Windows OS from Win95 up. Windows XP, Windows Vista and Win 7 both provide native (IDE)

Optiarc cd-rw crx880a ata device: This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Did you try to click "Troubleshoot" on the page that reported "cannot start" ?

Did you try to click on the device, and choose "uninstall" ?
Then, rebooting Windows should cause Windows to "find new hardware", and properly configure the DVD/CD drive.
