check your printer settings for paper quality, maybe your headed paper is of better quality and therefore thicker? and may be confusing the printer in some way.
The black ink cartridge is larger than the photo black cartridge and black is used in photos to make the darker colors. Black text takes much less ink per page.
Well if you already installed a new black ink cartridge and still wont print, then try cleaning your printer head. It can be that the some ink was hardened and got stuck preventing you to print a black color.
