    Same problem here

My gaurantee is still valid so im reluctened to open the shell

Not sure if this is related but, I am now, after being a happy owner for a while, find that the drive does not spin up anymore. The unit is receiving power ok but, regardless of whether its plugged in firewire or usb. The ring indicator lights are on and flicker when it is plugged in, it just doesnt mount up anymore. Could this be related to the power source circuitry? Could I have fried the board somehow?

I e the same problem. Please help! I cannot find WD book on laptop.

I have the My Book Premium II and it worked fine for about a year - now my laptop doesn't recognize it as being mounted, regardless of which USB I use. Also reinstalled the software and also tried on a 2nd laptop with no luck. Seems to work fine by the indicator lights.

I have the same issue but both on my desktop and laptop. The drive was excellent for about a year and then sporadically would not be recognized. At first a reboot of the drive and my PC would correct the problem, but now it cannot be recognized by either the desktop or laptop. I took it in to a local PC shop (Geekbox - excellent place) and they could not get it to mount either. Called WD support and would not help me at all because it has been more than 12 months. The ******* actually said, "try unplugging it from your powerstrip and plug it directly into the wall." That was his solution to get me off the phone. I'm done with WD but must retrieve my photos from this drive and prefer not to spend $500-$1000 on recovery software.

Change mybook from one pc to another

You have to install the backup software on the new computer. Either download from WD to use what came with the MyBook. Attach the MyBook and find it in My Computer. If it is not there, you have to reboot and find the attached device. After Windows recognized the drive, the backup software will ask you for a new backup but just decline and reactivate the plan (actions/reactivate). That should do it!

Computer not recognizing MyBook when plugged in

Have a look at this article on external hard disk troubleshooting. Could be that you need to delete the USB root hub devices in the Device Manager to force Windows to recognize the device.

Time machine won't backup reliably. It recognizes the MyBook drive, but after a few days of doing backups, it fails to recognize the drive anymore.

Western Digital hard drive inside is fried, check their website for information, they replace it for free if the drive itself is still in warranty, it might be gave it a shot.

Wdc 320 gig MyBook external hd is not recognized anymore. I have attempted to access the files on several different computers (laptops). The HD is powered on (light is on). I do hear a clicking sound when...

If you hear a clicking sound then that might be the sound of a defective harddrive. You could try removing the harddrive from the case and installing it directly into the computer to see if it is working. If it does then it could be the hard drive case power supply is defective. But the clicking sounds like a defective drive. If it is still under warranty then you could get it repaired by western digital...if it is still under warranty then do not open the case or you could void it.

My 1 terabyte my book is not recognized on my network anymore. i tried plugging it into my laptop directly and still nothing.

Does the laptop not pick it up at all? Perhaps the cable between the MyBook and the PC (the USB cable) is broken?

WD My Book Essential -- Can't find drivers

It should not really need drivers in Win2K or Vista, you might have a problem with your USB drivers. Go into device manager, remove any devices under the USB heading and reboot. All the drivers should reinstall and hopefully your MyBook will come alive again. Otherwise, try the MyBook on a friend's computer, if it doesn't work there then the MyBook may be faulty itself.

WD MyBook 320 GB Premium - Retrieving Data

You should buy a program called "Partition Table Doctor". I went through the EXACT same thing and it was just a bad partition on my mybook which is the EXACT same as yours is. It cleared up the problem for me. I still have problems with my mybook so i wish that I bought a different hard drive, but oh well.

but try "Partition Table Doctor", it will scan your mybook and fix any partition errors with it.

I was in the same boat as you over a year ago and trust me, "Partition Table Doctor" is a LIFESAVER!

MyBook 500gb won't show up?

I have had this problem with several MyBook hard drives. They work fine for a bit and then the windows xp OS fails to recognize them. If they do show up the computer warns me they are not formatted. My solution does not help fix the MyBook as is. However, if you have data you must have on it this may be of help. I simply opened up the MyBook plastic case. It is different for each drive. The Pro/premiums I have found you must remove the rubber packing to get at the latch area. After I removed the bare drive from the holder I used an IDE/SATA adapter kit with external power and plugged directly into a USB port. The drive was recognized immediately and I offloaded the data. The drive actually works better now then when it was in the Mybook holder. I am taking no chances though and have switched to LaCie drives. Hope this helps somewhat.
