My washer filled up with water and would not operate. It was making a loud noice once in a while. The repair man thinks that it is the timer and is charging $250. I am afraid that it something more and it will be a money pit. Does any one have an suggestions? My washer filled up with water and would not operate. It was making a loud noice once in a while. A small motor that rotates the timer has gone bad. Common practice is to replace the timer. Usually a mechanical timer of this type is less expensive than a computerized timer.
When the cycle doesn't advance, it's probably the timer or a cold-water supply problem:
It's the timer, if your washing machine fills with water and begins agitating, but the timer never advances--or if the washer is in a spin cycle and the timer won't advance. Then you need to replace the timer.
It may be a cold-water supply problem, if the washing machine fills with water, agitates, drains, and spins, but then doesn't fill with rinse water. See There's no cold water.
With top loaders you need to add to the list problems related to motor and transmission. Such problems will be at the end of the troubleshooting list, right before inspecting the electronic control.
With this model the more common failures are concerning drain system, lid switch and pressure switch.
HI, this timer is faulty and, these are early warning signs of potential failuer of this device in the near future. i would prepare to replace the timer control soon. the actual mechanism is showing signs of breakdown.
If the Washer is stuck in spin then either the timer or a cold-water supply problem is causing this :
It's the timer, if your washing machine fills with water and begins agitating, but the timer never advances--or if the washer is in a spin cycle and the timer won't advance, then you need to replace the timer.

The first thing I would check is if your timer is advancing. Set it at th beginning of a wash cycle and let it go. See if the timer knob arrow advances. If it doesn't, your timer is bad.
If your washer fills but the timer cycle doesn't advance-replace the timer. If your washer fills the time cycle advance, and still not agitating your agitator is at fault.
