The Kenmore Ice maker makes no ice. This is a side by side unit. The freezer is very cold. The water solenoid is not faulty, but is not turning on so the problem must be in the electronic ice level detection boards or the wiring to the solenoid. (The water in the door works fine... so I tested the ice water supply solenoid using the water in the door control... and the ice solenoid turned on when the water in the door dispensor lever was activated)... The LED light on the ice maker comes on when the door is opened. But with all door switches closed as if the door were closed, no water is coming into the ice maker. The water solenoid id not being energized. Is there a method to trouble shoot the two electronic boards that detect the ice in the bin? (without replacing both boards?) One board is simply an LED that should 'shine' into the photo transistor of the opposite electronic board through the ice bin. There is no visible light being emitted from the left LED board. The right board has a power LED that comes on for a short tme when the door is opened. Do I need to order both boards to determine which is bad? We shined a red LED pointer beam into the receiving photo transistor hole without any change. The refridgerator was purchased in 2004 and is beyond the warranty period. The temperature controls are both set at '4' which is the recommended mid range. Other than no ice, the refridgerator works perfectly. Is there an ice water filter that may be frozen? but we cannot hear or feel the solenoid energizing for the ice like we can for water-in-the-door solenoid. Thank You in advance for any help you may give, including after market parts suppliers. Monte Wilke

Good chance the water line near the ice maker motor is frozen. Thaw out the freezer for about 6 hours - move your frozen stuff to the refrig - ot should be OK - then back again after thawing. This alnost always works.

Freezer wont make ice cubes

This is not difficult to troubleshoot.
  • When the arm is up the ice maker is off
  • When the bucket is full the arm is up the maker is off.
  • If the ice maker has a on/off button in off the ice maker is off
  • If the ice maker internal heater fails the cubes will not release and the white plastic ejector arms will be rotated CCW and pressing against the ice in the tray, Normal position for ejector arms is vertical.
  • If water solenoid has failed or water supply not available the ice maker will cycle. The ice tray will be empty,(hard to see if ice tray is empty). Check and replace water fill solenoid.
  • If ice in tray and ejector arms vertical several possibilities.
    • Freezer not cold enough to trip thermostat in ice maker to initiate release cycle.
    • Check freezer temperature <10 Fahrenheit thermostat in ice maker failure
    • Ice maker motor failure,
    • Internal ice maker electrical connections rotary switch failure,
The best way to check the operation is to manually lock the arm up into the off retention position. Wait a minimum of one hour. Open door and release arm down. Observe the operation of the ice maker. Is after a minute or so the ejector arm does not rotate then it is likely the ice maker has failed internally. If the ejector turns and no ice than you can assume either the water supply is off external from the refrigerator or more likely the water solenoid located behind the bottom back cover has failed. It is also possible that the hose that connects the solenoid to the ice maker has frozen right where it enters the freezer just above the ice maker. You should see ice built up at the entrance where the water fills the tray if this has occurred.

Ice maker in kenmore coldspot refrigerator quit making ice, nowater flow

There are several causes of no ice maker operation. First, is the freezer cold enough? It must be below 32F to operate the icemaker. 2nd: Is the bale or metal rod that runs along the side of the ice maker in the down position? 3rd: You may have a failed water solenoid valve, located on the back of the unit. The plastic or copper water line from your house's water supply is attached to this valve.

Kenmore Galaxy Ice Maker Not Making Ice

Sounds like you have a bad water valve. It will have a dual water valve on the back where the water connects to the unit. You can take the wire plugs and swap them around. Then push the water in the door leaver. hold it for around 4 sec. Then see if the ice tray has water in it. If it does, you have a bad valve. If not you ice make is bad, turned off or the freezer is not cold enough to operate. ( It has to be 5degrees or lower before the ice maker will try to operate)
Please rate this solution if it helps. Thanks

Kenmore Coldspot Model 70162990 - not making ice

You've either got a bad timer on the ice maker or the water valve is defective. You need to verify that the timer is moving first. If it isn't try pushing in on the dial on the end of the ice maker. It is under the white square cover at the end of the ice maker, usually towards the door, but in some units it points to the left side wall. If it begins to run when you do that, then the timer is broken. If not then I would say that the valve is defective.

Kenmore Ice Maker

Sounds like a water valve problem to me. Force the ice maker to cycle. (turn it off and let it get cold for at least an hour then turn it back on). Test for voltage on the ice maker side of the valve. The valve is usually in the back near the floor. Just follow the water line. Another solution. switch the wires on the water valve. then try the water dispenser and see if it makes the ice maker fill up. See if when the ice maker cycles water comes out the door. If the ice maker causes water in the door , replace the valve, If door switch causes ice maker to fill up replace ice maker again.
