Linux uses a different file system then Windows.
In order to install XP you will have to boot a XP disk ,delete ALL partitions, & then format the "Raw" disk to the NTFS file system.
After the hard drive is formatted to NTFS the XP installation should continue automatically.

Hi you will need to contact the manufacturer of the computer,
Dell, Acer, HP etc [ not the motherboard manufacturer] and select their support option. Some manufacturers have a lock code on the hard drive and if you can get the unlock key then you will be ok. The only other option is to replace the hard drive.

Bought online...doesnt boot all the way up say insert bootable disc...what does that mean and or what kind of disc do I need??? Aspire 5250-0639

sounds like the Hard drive doesnt have a operating system installed (seller may have wiped or replaced the harddrive), or the hard drive is damaged or missing(removed), - you would need a install dvd for windows or a bootable or installer dvd for linux . and replace the harddrive if it is damaged or missing

the Bootable disk its talking about
is its next attempt at starting a operating system from a cd,dvd or usb source after trying for a harddrive startup- but failing to find an operating system

My e-machines had windows 7 and became unusable. I had to use my pc and resorted to installing linux on it. I got the recovery discs from e-machines and after I put in the 1st recovery disc, it said...

Hi,
You are getting this error because linux is installed on it.
Windows doesn't go well with linux.
Format your harddrive using any 3rd party formatter tool.
I mean, it should be like a blank hardrive without any files in it.
Then try to use the recovery disc.

I bought this machine refurbished from amazon.com and it came with a 40GB hard drive. When i try to put a larger one it and install windows it recognizes the hard drive but after copying files is done, it...

This machine can't use a hard drive larger than what it came with.
This is a very old machine and won't be able to run anything more than Windows 2000.
About the only thing that is current and will run worth a darned is Linux. With Linux you'll be able to use the larger hard drives as well.

How to install linux on compaq presario cq40-144tu

hrm... i'll just assume that this is the first time you've attempted anything with linux? There are vairous Linux distributions, with the Ubuntu flavour seeming to be the best one for the windows to linux switcher (IMO). I would try a live Ubuntu disc first to make sure it's what you're after, which can be downloaded here
http://releases.ubuntu.com/intrepid/ubuntu-8.10-desktop-i386.iso

or if you're ready to dive straight in, here is the full version that you burn to a cd and then install

Install xp vista linux

If you're trying to install all three operating systems onto the same partition it's creating a conflict, more than likely between Vista and linux. XP and Vista are similar enough and recognize each other, putting them in the same partition is ok, but try setting up another partition to install the linux to. I'm curious as to why you want or need all three on the same machine?

Problem

The WindowsXP setup program will hang when it tries check hardware at the beginning of setup. It won't recognize the linux file system as a legitimate drive and freeze. You'll need to either format the drive and lose all the linux data, or buy a second drive to install Windows on and make the windows drive the primary drive, and temporarily disconnect the linux drive. After you install Windows you can reconnect the linux drive as secondary. You can check the forums for your version of linux and find help on setting up a dual boot system so you can boot from Windows and linux. You'll just have to make adjustment to the linux bootloader config file.
Linux is a great operating system, but is not for the faint of heart.
Good Luck
