Question about Hitachi 50V710 50" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television
I have been told I need a new optical block to correct a yellow screen.
I was told this is a known problem with Hitachi by one of their authorized service dealers, but customer relations is stonewalling me on this. Any ideas?
I contacted Hitachi (800-448-2244) on 02-18-09 and spoke with customer service rep. name Joyce. I explained the yellow in the middle of the screen and told here a Tech came out and said that the problem was the light engine not the light unit. She immediately said that she would send a brand new Light Engine to the repair company that diagonsed the problem. She said I would have to pay for labor. The light engine is a $1000+ part and the repair company said labor would be $300 dollars. The key is you have to say that a tech looked at it and diagonsed it as the light engine and not the light unit. Find a repair company in your area and let the customer service rep. know that they looked at it about a month ago and you can't find the paperwork. The customer service rep will then recommend a company in your area to come and look at the TV. The tech company will probably charge a tech fee $100+ dollars, and about $300 for labor, all total $400 for parts and labor is not bad when the Light Engine itself is a $1000+ part. Hope this helps.

Same problem here as well with my Hitachi 50v710. It's a small yellow spot in the center of the screen. I guess it will get larger over time. My set is aprox 2 years old.

Same problem here on my Hitachi 50v710 about 3 years old, getting yellow around the edges.
This is dissapointing to see the only suggested solution would cost over 1000$!!!

Hi, whoever told you optical block was correct and this is a major problem with many different makes not just Hitachi.
All you can do is keep asking to speak to the next higher up person at customer service, this is a high failure high dollar repair and they should cut you some slack, good luck with it,

That' what I hear, but how do I prove it?
I'm trying to find out who manufactures the optical blocks, and why they are known to fail; moreover, why the industry has not been taken to task if it is such a well known problem.
I'm trying to find documentation to back up my complaint.
i have the same problem, It started out as just a replacement of the bulb because the picture was not as clear as it used to be, my tv is only 3yrs old. I noticed the yellow spot right in the center of the tv after the bulb was changed. The people at circuit city tell me it needs a new light engine. The company prepared to fix the problem is waiting to hear for an approval for replacement of the PART or the TV. which ever is cheaper i suppose. If they are prepared to replace my tv i want a MAGNOVOX i had one for over 10yrs.
My 50v710 developed the infamous yellow spot just before its third anniversary. The technician comes tomorrow and we'll see what the fix will cost.
I have the same problem with a Hitachi 42V710 and can't get any resolution from Hitachi. The set is 3 years old. I see that Sony settled a class action suit for the same problem in some of their sets (Sony makes the optical block) but I can't find anything that Hitachi is doing for their customers.
I have an Hitachi model 42V710 projection TV. I have had it just 3 years. My set, too, has developed the dreaded "yellow spot" which quickly encompassed the entire screen. Registering my concern with Hitachi customer relations has gotten nowhere. "We are not aware of this being a problem with this model, we can't help you and there is no one else here who can change this answer" was their response.
The local authorized repairman told me he has had to repair a number of Hitachi projection LCD TVs with similar optical block problems. The repair estimate quoted just for parts for a new optical block was $995, not counting $300 labor. No great bargain since a new flat screen can be purchased for no more than that. Needless to say, this is very disappointing.
Has anyone else out there had any luck with getting Hitachi to own up to this problem and make it right?
i have the 50v710 for about 3 yrs
i replaced the lamp once
but last week there was yellow line on the top screen all along the screen & the right side from buttom to top
what should i do ?
Yes I am having the same issue with my tv.I purchased this set about 2.5 years ago and when calling Hatachi, customer relations is no help at all,due to the length of time I have had the tv.Where can I go from here other than buying a new tv once again?
I also have a 50v710 (almost 3 years old ... Do we see a pattern here?) with the Yellow Spot in the middle of the screen. I called Hitachi and pushed pretty hard for a while to get some help with the replacement of the Light Engine (optical block) but didn't get any help from them. They told me that since it was out of warranty they couldn't help me. They were actually quite rude. They seemed bothered that I would dare to call and ask such a thing. They claimed they have never heard of this problem before ... I told them that there are quite a few people on the internet with the exact same problem with the same model TV. They added that they think postings like this on the web is from vindictive people that have it out for them for one reason or the other. I can assure you that I have better things to do with my life than get on the internet to expose Hitachi's quality problems, but I think more people need to let it be known they have a problem too. Perhaps Hitachi will own up to it and fix their mistake, or perhaps have a class action suit filed against them much in the same way that Thomson Consumer Electronics had for using inferior solder in their tuner boards which rendered many of their TVs useles over time (RCA, GE etc.).
I almost forgot. When I was on the phone with customer service they looked up the availability of the Light Engine (Optical Block). They were on back order ... Can you believe it?
Mine turned yellow shortly after a light bulb replacement too. There seems to be an overheating issue in the light engine. I pulled out the light engine to inspect and clean it and one of the filters on the light engine itself was clogged pretty good. Even if you keep the vents clear on your TV this filter can easily get clogged. It's not really a user serviceable area for the average consumer either. I wouldn't be surprised to see failure of this nature on all of these in the near future ... if that filter clogs (and it will in time) then the light engine will fail.
I have the yellow spot on my 50v710. I am going to call and see what Hitachi has to say. I'm very disappointed to hear about the $1000.00 cost of repair!
I'll post my findings
Mac
please keep me update of this problem on the Hitachi 50V710 model. My wife can't take it anymore. The "yellow spot" make her sick because as her eye's are focused on a program. Then the changes happen. yellow spots. I need to take of the issue as soon as we can. Please advise.
I purchased the Hitachi 50v710 approx. 3 years ago. Within the last 4 days, I have sprouted a blooming yellow Daisy on my 50" screen. It actually resembles a flower- a large yellow flower. I thought easy fix, get another bulb...wrong.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
The whole picture has a yellow hue. White looks yellow
Wow, I did not know there were so many problems with the same yellow hue in middle of the screen on the Hitachi 50V710. I thought it was just my TV malfunctioning. My television is now out of warranty (seems to always breakdown after the warranty). I will be calling Hitachi today to see if they will assist me with this matter. If they play strong-arm with me I will never buy an Hitachi product again. If any suggestions please let me know, Thanks!
i have the same yellow spot in the middle of my hitachi tv. you would think that an exspensive tv would last more than 3 years. i found a place in miami near my house that had refurbished optical blocks for $550. are they haed to replace your self? hitachi ill not fix it since it is no longer under warranty.
I have the same yellow spot problem with the Hitachi 50V710 and my tv is just 2.5 years old for $1000 part plus labor why would I even bother to fix it a new TV is the almost same price. But it won't be a Hitachi
