The system control board has shut the camera down to prevent damage, the lens housing will need to be replaced because you have two problems, one the lens is jammed and second the shutter is open, the cost to repair will be equal if not more than a new one.

I think most of these questions about black LCD's and black pictures relate to a stuck shutter. My Lumix LX2 has this. The screen is black and so are the pictures. On looking at the shutter through a magnifying glass I took a shot and I saw that the iris works fine, but the shutter did not open. I am sending the camera for repair at a reasonable rate from Clearer images here in the UK.This is the email: [email protected] Time will tell won't it?

Not sure if you mean the automatic lens cover, or the actual lens shutter, so here's fixes for both:

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, sometimes with lines, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open). To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help. Recommend trying the pencil tapping fix listed in the link. It worked on my SD1000 with the same problem.

By the way, my wife happens to own a SD1000. Great little camera, but it's prone to stuck shutter every once and a while. Easily fixed each time though by simply opening the battery door while on, and gently flicking the lens barrel a few times. Again, see the link.

Your shutter may be stuck open... this will give the appearance of the shutter not opening as well as no image when you look through the viewfinder.

Open the back of the camera, as if you were replacing the film, and look to see if the shutter is open. If it is, you can probably see light coming through the lens when looking from the back of the camera.

If this is the case, you will need to find out why the shutter is stuck open.

Some cameras use a battery to activate the shutter, some cameras have a "bulb" setting that keeps the shutter open for long exposures.

Whatever you do, do NOT force the shutter... I might jiggle it a little bit to see if it will close, but I wouldn't recommend more than a slight jiggle.

While you have camera open, inspect the mirror. If the shutter is closed but the mirror is stuck "up" (to allow light to reach the shutter/firm), there is a chance that you would not be able to activate the shutter.

Are you talking about the shutter, or do you really mean the automatic lens cover ? Take a look at this first to see if this is what you meant. Make sure you read the comments also for additional tips. I don't think it will be necessary to open it up to fix it. Have the electronic shutter checked by a repair shop. Sounds like your Seiko electronic shutter has died or there's a short somewhere between shutter and lens. Hope this helps.
