You're suffering the infamous Yellow light of death. supposedly (from what I've heard) the heating compound inside the system that protects it's innards from the massive amount of heat the system generates breaks down over the years of use.
You can try and fix it yourself, there are plenty of tutorials for that on the internet but most people end up destroying their system and Sony wont even touch it after you've broken the seals even if you pay them.
At this point you're going to need to get your system replaced. it's about $160 USD and you get a new (refurbished to new condition) system with a 1 year warranty. Hopefully you've backed up your content to an external drive. if you upgraded to a new internal harddrive, remove it and replace it with the original drive. When you get the box in the mail from them with all the paper work make sure to let them know on the sheet that a game is stuck inthe system. Also when you get your replacement system you'll need to make sure to call sony and get the original system removed from your account because it will take away from your 5 download slots since you couldnt deactivate it yourself with this problem.

Your GPU gets hot, because when u start the console it gets hot, nd when u start a game it becomes hotter, when the system detects that ur GPU is hot it shuts down Automatically, the cause of this problem is common, you need to replace the GPU's thermal compound nd try to find the The Arctic Silver one, it's the best.. GOOD LUCK
Try to start to the system in safe mode to check if this will resolve the problem.Safe mode is available to PS3 system software version 2.60 or later. To do the safe mode follow these steps:
Verify that the power indicator on the PS3 system is solid red, and then turn off the MAIN POWER switch.
Turn on the MAIN POWER switch, then touch and hold the power button.
Keep touching the power button even after you hear a short beep after 5 seconds.
After 10 seconds, you will hear another short beep and the system will shut down (release the button at this point).
Touch and hold the power button again.
Continue touching the power button even after you hear a short beep after 5 seconds.
Release the button when two short beeps are emitted after 7 seconds.
As instructed by the on-screen message, press the PS button to start up in safe mode
Again, people assume because it is blinking red that it is the "YLOD", better known as a hardware failure.
"When the power status light flashes red after using the PS3 system for 3 or more minutes and shuts off, the PS3 system has possibly over heated. This may be caused by poor ventilation or the vents may be blocked."
"If this happens:
• Check to see if the vents are blocked. If the vents are dusty, vacuum the vents to remove the dust.
• If the PS3 system is in an enclosed area like a bookshelf or entertainment center, move it to a more open area.
• Leave the PS3 system off for 30 minutes to let it cool down.
• If you continue to have issues, you will have to send the system in for service."
Hello,
You can also try the steps below. Its from PlayStation Forum:
1. Turn off Playstation®3. 2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again. 3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps 4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button. 5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button 6. The Recovery menu will pop up.
The current Recovery Menu supports: • Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System. • Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default. • Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files. • Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3. • Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch. • System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System
If the above steps still does not solve the problem, then I think will have to update your Ps3.
Update your PS3 (in the settings menu the 1st option).
Go on the internet browser on the PS3 then go on the menu press triangle then on one of them there are delete cookies and the delete the others as well as cookies.
You could also try this as well: put the PS3 on then press the eject button (with no disc in) then hold it and switch the PS3 off at the back with your finger on the eject button still holding it, then put it back on and the fan test should be working this may cool it down. It might be over heating.
But if your problem is not still solved, then maybe you should call sony for further assistance. Take care.

i was playing mw2 yesterday and bam (red light of death) ill prob have to send it to sony but i got the game out follow these steps. 1. turn off at the back. 2. hold your finger on the eject button. 3. turn on again at the back while holding the eject button for a few seconds 4.your playstation should start up and your game should be ejected
Listen to the PS3... if you hear a fan running, your good. The fan is usually quite loud. It does look like your system is overheating. It is one of the older models, therefore Sony didn't learn from its mistakes much before they made it.
hay if you fell it getting hot fast it's the heat transfer compound in the system which is wearing away causing it to over heat and shut down as a safety precaution. so there for it will keep freezing of shouting down.
