Whilst listening to the cd player suddenly the sound becomes distorted for no apparent reason and when I insert the navigation cd the machine w'ont read the disc.It will right itself for a short period and then go faulty again.Can you please help?

If you search on most good car stereo web sites, they will ask for your vehicle information, and will only show you head units that will fit your dash. You can also buy custom dash plates to fit non-OEM shaped units.
sounds like distortion is being caused by trying to amplify a low volume level from the input device. try putting the ipod volume at a medium level and try again to see if the distortion goes away/reduced
The Op Amp in the unit are oscillating if you hear hiss and if there is distortion they could be bad. This is a job for a Technician to check out. Make sure you are NOT plugging in a CD player output into a Phone input on a receiver or amp. The CD is 1000 time too much voltage.
