Question about SimpleTech SimpleDrive Pininfarina 500GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive - Onyx

1 Answer

Mine will work on my desktop but not my notebook

I was doing a backup of my notebook onto the simpletech simple drive 500gb external hard drive and the pc froze. I had to turn it off manually. When it came back on, it started checking the disk and deleting what i assume was the unfinished backup. Now, when I click on the external drive, it says it is not accessable. So I put it on my desktop and works fine. I've tried everything to gain access short of system restore on my notebook. help please.

This is usually a corrupt USB driver for the device. On the machine that has trouble recognizing the drive:
right click my computer
click on properties
click on device manager
find the USB devices, click the plus sign to expand the tree.
Plug in your drive, see which new device appears, if it has the exclamation point, then right click on the device and click uninstall. Reboot the system.

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked (with the computer and hard drive plugged in). I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

Hello, my hard drive starts up...runs for a bit, then turns off, whats the deal? it does it everytime now, whether it is hooked to the computer or not

It could be just "overheating", or it could be "near-death".

Make a good backup of it, while you still can.

Consider opening-up the case, removing the disk-drive, and buying and replacing the disk-drive.

When you backup your software, you need to backup the installation files, not the software once it is installed as the installation procedure places various files within the Windows system folders. Simply restoring the backed up files will not re-install that software. You should back up your data files etc but the software on your old drive will need to be re-installed from scratch.

Purchased Hitachi simple drive 500gb to back up computer, can this be partitioned to assign different drive letters, so can back up more than 1 computer?

stvintex

Yes you can. However you will have to remove the one partition that is already on the driver and make the new smaller partition.

However depending on the backup software that you are using you do not need its own drive for the backup you can just make folders for the computers to be backed up too.

Let me know if you have any more problems or questions

I have a simpletech pininfarina 500 external hard-drive and cant find driver software online to install it.computer also doesnt recognise it

I have found a driver page of simpletech:
http://www.simpletech.com/support/support_downloads.php
I believe that driver for your model is not available in the above link.
The drive would not be recognized when it is not compatible with your notebook hard disk.
I suggest you to contact simpletech for getting the drivers as they will have the hard disk drivers.

do you mean that you used this as a "Data" drive and do not have the data stored on your pc...

that is basically the same as having no backup... if it is important, store the data in more than one location.

it is possible that a power surge killed the usb adapter on your storage device.... you may be able to transplant the HDD onto a working adapter or USB->HDD bridge to get your data back
