haven't used a win 2000 cd in a while so....Using a windows xp cd - boot to the recovery console and get to a command prompt. type 'chkdsk c: /r' with no quotes. this will check the partition for file system errors. If you are able to attach the hard drive to another pc with an external usb controller, you can chkdsk that way too. If it reports no problems, try this: Create a partition on the hard drive before installing windows then install to that partition. try creating a partition with an xp cd or be resourceful and try to find a boot cd that will let you create partitions on a hard drive. hope this helps!

If you have an invalid disk in the unit, is the floppy disk left in the disk drive.

However, to completely erase windows, fdisk and format does not work.

Download delpart.exe and use this utility. Be careful though. When delparting a laptop, make sure not to delete the small partitions, but only the ones that are NTFS.

However, if the laptop has a SATA hard drive, this method will not work unless you create a bootup script with delpart.exe to run automatically. Then it will work.

If you have any issue, blog it on the internet about the exact procedure to create an iso bootable disk to load delpart.exe.

I have an old laptop that partition and hd have been reformatted. I've tried using boot disk but keep getting the message that says, ''save to disk partition not found. So, can't get win98se to load as...

Haven't used win98 for a while so bear with me and this uses DOS COMMANDS too.
If useing restore cd/floppy you have to use a utility from compaq that creates two partitions on hard-drive.
They may have a restore floppy if you need it too.
One for "recovery files" and one for "OS Boot"
AHH, the memories, I still have my 95/98/ME Laptops up and running for older stuff. HP n CQ too.
Restore CD should do it all though.
If no restore CD - have Win98 CD?
if Harddrive partitioned and formated - Just do 1
1. boot from Win98 CD.
Partition n Format
2. Choose boot to DOS (puts u in virtual drive A)
AT PROMPT
3. Type drive letter of CD ( C: D: or E: )
4. Type CD Win98
5. Type Fdisk ( to partion drive)
reboot n do 1 + 2
6. Type format C: ( I do this to ckeck drive for errors)
OR
JUST Boot from CD and follow install instructions.
1 to 6 for if you have problem with Win98 CD setting up Harddrive.

How to reformat my MSI notebook?

You need to have an valid Operating System installer CD/DVD. This could be a Windows or Linux installer or whatever Operating System that you prefer.

  1. Turn your laptop on.
  2. Open the CD drive and load the CD Installer.
  3. Reset your laptop to manually reboot it. If you loaded the CD fast, this step is no longer required.
  4. The setup program will then load. Follow the onscreen procedure.
  5. At the point of selecting the hard disk drive, choose "Delete Partitions" to completely remove all data.
  6. After deleting partitions, create new partitions for your hard disk. You can choose to divide your hard disk capacity into 2 or more partitions depending on your requirements.
  7. Format the root partition now (Drive C) to continue the installation.

I am unable to install win Xp. when trying to boot from a cd to install fresh win xp ser. 2. system reboot after copying few installation files. The Bios set up shows the Sata Hard Drive but unable to load...

your HDD may be bad. I have had a number of HDD that appear fine in the BIOS but won't format either via the install disk or separately via a Linux boot disc.(You can somtimes hear them clicking on and off [seeking])

If you are mad keen on the drive, then D/L 'Hirens Boot Disc' and boot into the DOS mode (it also has a Mini XP mode).and use the HDD format utlity 'killdisk'. This will remove anything on the drive, format it and set it up ready for a fresh install.

If Hirens Boot Disk can't see the SATA drive then its stuffed.. for sure..

Os instalation will not load

Hi Dobssand, the most common reason for a CD-ROM (With a Windows CD in it) does not start to load is the motherboard's bios is not set correctly. While in the bios go to the title Boot & enter boot order. This is a common boot order for a PC.
1st boot device = [Floppy disk drive]
2nd boot device = [CD-ROM drive] (Model number of the CD-ROM drive).
3rd boot device = [Primary Hard Disk Drive] (Model number of drive).

Second most common reason is the data cable to the CD-ROM drive is loose or not fully connected either at the CD-ROM or at the motherboard. (Check it).
If you choose not to enter your bios, you can still get the CD-ROM drive to boot the Win CD in this fashion. Load the Win CD into the CD-ROM drive. Power off the system. Than power on the system & start to press the F8 key once every two seconds. Windows "Please select boot device:" window will open. Using your keyboards up & down arrow keys high-light the CD-ROM drive that has the win CD in it & press the enter key. Windows should start to load. If you receive an error message stating windows can not find your hard disk drive. Than you must enter your bios & go to the title Boot. Your hard disk drive is not listed in the boot order section. Worst case! Your hard disk drive may be faulty. Find the manufactures name printed on a large white sticker on once side of the HDD. Go to the manufactures web site & download their drive setup software so you can create a bootable floppy disk. This will allow you to check/test the HDD & format it for a windows installation.

Or is this not the issue you are having?

Good luck!
Mike
