I have an Acer AL2017 20inch. I am running Windows XP.As of recent the moniter will come on briefly just long enough to show the Acer screen as a 1 second flicker as the computer is booting up and then back to black when the computer is loaded up to my desktop page. I contacted Acer who told myself the F8 trick on comp bootup but it makes it a bit difficult to see what the options are when the moniter won't display anything but a black screen. However if I turn my system off using the power button on the front to put it into hibernate mode and turn it on again and press the F8 key the moniter again will show the picture I am used to seeing for the last 3 years. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem excluding the use of power button hibernate mode and F8 clicking?

Try these steps - in this order:

  1. Download the latest drivers for your video card but do not install it yet.
  2. Uninstall any video card software installed (ati catalyst/control center - nvidia etc)
  3. go to device manager, expand video adapters, and right click to uninstall them both.
  4. Reboot your pc. Windows will install a generic driver when it boots up. From there, install the new video drivers you downloaded in step 1.
  5. Get the monitor driver here: http://www.zdnetasia.com/downloads/pc/swinfo/0,39043052,50002410r-39518824s,00.htm and install it
  6. That should fix it. Let me know what happens.

If your on XP you can right click on the empty desktop and go to properties, Under the settings tab you will find options for screen resolutions. If your on Vista or 7 you right click on empty desktop space and go to screen resolution, There again you will easily find your settings for your screen resolution. Click apply and then click OK after that lay back and enjoy your screens clarity.

I bought Acer aspire 5738 recently i want to know wheather it will accept XP OS?please give me the clarification

yes it definitly will since you recently bought it,all operating systems will be supported by your laptop that were launched after 1998,so if you just bought a computer it definitly will have windows vista,if it has windows vista it will support windows xp,cauz vista is just a higher user interface than xp,in laymans terms it just needs a higher amount of ram and a higher processor, any old p3 or higher can run xp

You most likely have a capacitor that has changed value. When a capacitor goes bad it will work after it heats up. Sometimes a bad cap will have a bulging top or show signs of leakage. Sometimes can only be checked with a meter.
