Re:
Andrew the ribbon cable comes out from under the Reset/Eject Switch assembly and goes into a Connector on the left edge of the motherboard underneath the CD drive, I plugs into the second connector from the front.

Hi, It starts from power button and other side enter in main power circuit. Just remember the other side enters in the poweer circuit where you can see the place in which it inserts.(This is for both PS2 and PS2 slim models)
you were taking apart the ps2 since this is the fat ps2 im supposed to think first since your in the ps2 clean out the dust in it for future problems dust is why people keep throwing out fat ps2s and buying small ones they think its broke but its rather a dust problem clean it out the pute all the bolts in the right place if you dont have certain bolts in the ps2 doesnt start so have all the bolts in if its a ps2 slim try to unbolt all of the top and slide the lift thing in there scould be a little place in the top to just pop it in or bolt it in.... that could be a problem with the ribbon slide it back into the slot hopefully it still works the ribbon is really impotant its like a conector of the top and bottom part of the ps2 if all else fails get a repairman there are youssally reapair people at your local game place bestbuy, eb, gamestop ect.
Your PS2 probably has a dirty laser lens. Below is a procedure for cleaning the lens on the big PS2. It does not work on the Slim PS2. Do not ever use alcohol on a slim PS2 laser lens.
I hope your in the right posting area, this is for the Phat PS2 consoles with the drawer that comes out to put the CD in. Procedure is different for Slim PS2.
Disconnect power and turn the case upside down.
Remove the screw covers to expose the case screws. These are little square pieces or square rubber pads. You can use a thin knife blade to pry the hard plastic squares up.
Remove all the screws.
Remove the Warranty sticker to the right edge of the power socket.
Turn the PS2 over to set it right side up.
lift the top cover from the back and pull it forward slightly to clear the CD tray. Be careful of a possibly Ribbon cable attached to the lid going to the Reset/Eject buttons. Roll the cover over to the right leaving the ribbon intact.
Remove the CD tray lid.
Polish the Laser lens, and remove any lint or hair from the CD area. Use Alcohol and cotton swabs to clean the laser lens. By the way, Alcohol will damage a PS2 Slim lens. All lens are not created equally.
Hook up the power and A/v Cables.
Remove the little white disc from the CD tray lid.
Place a Disc on the spindle, and cap the disc with the little white piece that you removed from the CD tray cover.
Boot up the PS2 and test it, Continue cleaning until you get it to work.
Put it back together, and you’re in business.
If you have trouble you can send your PS2 to a Repair shop. Click on "Repair Directory" at the bottom of this screen. then choose "Video Game Consoles". Then you pick a Good Repair shop. My shop is listed, but I cannot divulge the name in this forum. Cost will be $25 plus shipping. Shipping is usually $8.95 to the USA

What kind of disc is it? The PS2 can sometimes have a dirty lens and not read discs. It does not matter if the Disc is new and unscratched. I hope your in the right posting area, this is for the Phat PS2 consoles with the drawer that comes out to put the CD in. Procedure is different for Slim PS2.

Hi
If it will play DVD's this is a good sign. You will only need to clean the lens of the laser. Also clean the hub that the Disc rides on. I hope your in the right posting area, this is for the Phat PS2 consoles with the drawer that comes out to put the CD in. Procedure is different for Slim PS2.

Use a pair of needle nose pliers and grip the connection end of the Ribbon cable by the hard plastic piece. Insert this cable in the second connector from the front. The connectors are located under the right edge of the CD drive.
