I changed the bulb on my samsung HL-P4674W and the background of the picture is often darker than it should be. I've tried to set up with test DVD but still the same. does it just need a pro set up or is that a waste of money.

Normally when your picture starts to get darker or dimmer it usually means that the lamp is almost out, your are able to go to a page called discount-merchant.com they have good prices on tv lamps and tv parts also and they also help you with questions you may have.
sounds like a the color wheel blown. Call a local tv repair shop. Some Samsung models carry two different color wheels for same model depending on chassis version which can be seen only when the back is removed.
The lamp is in the rear of the set and is a square shape with 4 screws. You will need a Phillips screwdriver to remove the panel and then the lamp housing.
DO you have the owners mannel if so read it and see what they would do ,have you removed the lamp and if so how did it look? some lamps only last for 5,000 hrs and others 8,000 hrs If lamp is bad TV will not come on.
