Humming noise i have a GE nautilus GSD2200 model which has not been used more than 4 years that is giving me trouble.  it's making a loud humming noise (the noise comes and goes, comes and goes) which seems to be coming from the motor area at the bottom of the unit.  I stopped it in the middle of the cycle, but the water seems to be stagnant at the bottom.  any suggestion on fixing the problem myself?

I have the same problem. What do I do to free the motor?

  • Anonymous Feb 02, 2008

I have the same problem, how do you free the motor? I opened up the bottom panel and I can see that the motor isnt running. I have a pool of water at the bottom of the dishwasher and its not going away. The pool of water is filled enough to almost spill out when the door is opened.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have seen this SOOOOO many times in my 35+ years in the appliance repair industry.......it is very typical....here you are this is an answer I provided someone with the exact problem not to long ago..............

This is a typical GE problem which I have seen many times...When a DW sets for a while not being used...the motor often freezes up....Take the front (lower panel off....find the motor assembly...(with the DW unplugged!!...very important) reach in with you hand or a screw driver...preferably your hand...at the back of the motor...there should be a impeller blade...you should be able to reach in with a finger and pull it down..it may be resistant so find a way to hold it in place as you reach up to the next impeller blade and pull down further...finally it will all of a sudden free up....after which you plug it back in and start it up...I am also including a step by step (no drain problem check list as you may run into an issue like this if it has not been operated for a while ....notice article # 5).

1. Air gap / Drain hoses
If there is an air gap (located in the sink, near the faucet), check to see if it is clogged. Unscrew the top cap and see if there's anything blocking inside. Note: If there is no air gap installed, the dishwasher might not drain properly.

If the drain hose is clogged, the dishwasher would not drain. If there is an air gap installed, it is very common that a hose going from the air gap into the garbage disposer is clogged. Remove and clean the hose. Make sure to reattach the hose before starting dishwasher.

Note: If you recently had a garbage disposer installed, it is common to overlook removing the drain plug.

2. Broken belt
Some dishwasher models use a belt to drive the pump. Replace the belt if found broken.

Note: Sometimes the belt would just come off the pump. Even though it might not be broken, it is recommended that you replace the belt, because it is probably too stretched out.

3. Pump
Some models have two impellers inside the pump - one, wash impeller, takes care of the wash cycles, the other, drain impeller, drains the water out. If the drain impeller is broken (broken blades, shaft), the dishwasher would not drain. Replace any broken pump components.

4. Drain solenoid
Some models (for example most GE dishwashers) use a drain solenoid to drain water out. Sometimes the solenoid gets stuck, preventing the water from draining out. Try to free up the solenoid. If unsuccessful, you might have to replace the pump assembly.

5. Motor
If the motor is stuck, it is sometimes possible to free it up by manually spinning the motor.

Replace the motor if defective.

6. Timer
Replace if defective (note: uncommon problem).

This is an add on I thought about later...if you know someone who has or if you have or can get and electrical spray (cleaner/lubricant) it has to be nonconducting......spray for electric motors or coils...it will help prevent this to a degree and the motor will run better.

I hope this helps...Good Luck and good day.....please rate my effort...the Fang

It sounds like a short in either the timer or wiring. I would have an appliance tech check it out.

Refrigerator is making a rather loud humming noise. It is still working fine, just noisey. Is this a problem? By the way, its only two years old. It is a GE model #GSH25JJTA SS

pull the unit away from the wall and see if the motor is gummed up with dust. motor is behind unit on the bottom. if it is, clean it off with a tolit brush. if its clean and still humming thats your motor making the noise. call a repair man.

GE Spacemaker XL1800(JVM1850CF001) - Loud Humming noise

You either have a bad magnetron tube (5 or 10 year parts warranty item through GE Factory Service 1-800-432-2737 or www.geappliances.com) or a shorted high voltage rectifier. I think the light being out is a secondary problem.

This would be the motor that spins the dish washing unit in the bottom. The noise you hear might mean that the motor will need to be replaced.

GE NAUTILUS DISHWASHER

The pump motor may be stuck. If this is the case, as it often is with a GE dishwasher, you can break it loose (e.g. spin the impeller until it doesn't spring back any more). If it's not stuck, it may have something inside of the pump motor and it may need to be replaced.

GE SidexSide PSS26SGPASS Makes Humming Noise

GE refrigs have a variable speed evaporator fan motor that is controlled by a computer board on the back of the refrig. now the noise you are hearing is most likely the fan motor ramping up and down in speed (some of my customers say it sounds like a ghost). if its a continuous ramping up and down then the speed cotroller on the board is bad and must be replaced. if its just an occasional sound then thats normal and nothing to worry over.

Btw the reason the noise stops when the door opens is because the fan shuts off when you open the door.
