Re: My JLMS XJ-HD166S Lite On DVD player on my computer...
First of all DO NOT install any drivers. Windows itself will operate all drives on its compatibility list and more I'm sure. Drivers from web could be corrupted. The latest firmware update is late 2004: support for reading DVD=R DL discs only now possible. Trusted sites for this: Dell, HP, etc or use new firmware auto-updater at: http://us.liteonit.com/us/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=152

Does it not acknowledge dvd disc only or cd or dvd both. If it doesn't read the dvd disc, or able to play dvd disc, but able to exlpore regular cd's, then you have a codec error, and you need to download a dvd codec like powerdvd for it for your system to play dvd disc. Check to see if your dvd-rom drive appears in the "my computer" window, if it is there, but wouldn't be able to play anything, then it could be a driver issue. so make sure in the hardware , the drivers is installed and working properly. If it is working properly and driver is installed, then you got a bad drive, the optical laser lenses isnt reading or the spindle ain't working anymore if you don't hear disc being loaded when inserting the disc.
I will explain to you how to solve this problem steps by steps. First of know that all steps are based on a windows 7 and xp. If you have a different computer version no matter, just try to find the steps I gives below. (These are valuable steps to teach you how to fix the CD/DVD problems). Step 1: Turn on your computer Step 2: Go to START then open it Step 3: Open CONTROL PANEL Step 4: Click where says SYSTEM Step 5: then a new window will open Step 6: Now you have to look for the CD and DVD devices and click on then Step 7: And finally on the top bar click on SCAN FOR HARDWARE CHANGES and that's it your cd/dvd must be working properly after you have done all of these steps. Have a good luck!!!
Have had this issue in the past with Lite-On in particular. Stop gap measure was to uninstall and reinstall to get it working temporarily. It seems the life span of Lite-On isn't all that great. Best of luck.
do you have a burning software installed? you can download nero express @ majorgeeks.com
you mention that your friend gave it to you? was it working fine before? its easy to set up your new dvd writer whenever you have already installed a burning software like nero. well, you can also try clone dvd. it works very well too.
and also check for firmware upgrades for your dvd writer...you can find it here...
