Yes, I am a computer / electronics person and by brother's tv had the same problem, here is a complete description of the problem and the fix. Many thanks to all that have come before
Symptoms
1) While watching tv, there will be vertical grayish lines that move around a bit on the screen
2) While viewing a menu, the menu will be all hacked up as if the bits are all out of order
3) If you unplug all of the sources and then re-power the tv, unplug from wall, the tv will seem it is working fine. Menus will work until a video source (Component) is plugged into the tv.
Tacking the back off
WITH TWO PEOPLE Lay the TV on a table with a blanket, etc to protect the tv. Do not try and move the TV with the back off in general. You may flex the screen and damage it.
Remove all of the screws from the back including the one under the sticker near the left bottom. Remove the stand from the bottom. Lift the back up from the left to the right. Power is hooked to the right of the back. Remove the two screws to remove the power jack from the back.
Remove the back and place aside
Remove the RF cover from and the board will be underneath
Remove all of the screws from the board and from the RCA connectors from the outside bottom of the board.
Carefully remove all of the wires, taking time to remove the glue from the connectors. The glue should "Snap Off", take your time here. Remove the wires, noting where they all are. Take your time with the big connector on the left side.
You will see that all / some of the caps will have a discoloration on the bottom.
Replace and replace ALL of the caps on the upper left side of the board. It's OK to replace with a higher value Voltage, they must be the same uf value of equal or higher voltage. They must be electrolytic caps (+/-). Make sure the line up the - properly with replacing. Radio shack may not have all of the them, but other electronics supply place should. They are call fairly common.
If you have never done this before, find someone that has, or find another tutorial on how to do this. You will need a small soldering iron and solder ****** and very thin solder from Radio Shack.
Replace the board, we tested by putting the board back. Sliding the TV on a table so the top could be seen and then plugging a source in and verifying it worked before reassembly. You HAVE to have a component source plugged in or it will false positive the test. We found this out the hard way....
Replace the back and the screws. On the right side of the TV MAKE SURE that the AC power wires are NOT in the way the screws on the right hand side.
Replace the TV to the original position and test....
Reason for Problem.
Either they have a flaw in the design, but more probably they had a poor supplier of the Capacitors. I have seen this before and we will probably see it again. This really should be some sort of class action suit since they are all failing about 1.5 years of use.

several things use hdmi cabling, also change resolution (can sometimes be changed on front of direct tv receiver) or may have to go through menu to change to the different resolutions. also turn the native mode OFF! having the native mode on for directv will give sometimes give you odd pictures. also whatever resolution you choose through directv menu's make sure your tv is also set to the same resolution
