Had a power failure yesterday. Generator powered up, but two circuits tripped as it transferred power to genset. Now power is only generated for 5-10 seconds every couple of minutes. When commercial power returned, I was able to reset the two tripped breakers with no problem. Generator's board indicates an overspeed condition. Its a 12Kw Generac with the automatic transfer switch. Should I mess with it or call for a tech?
Thanks for the advice....

There isn't much you can do with servicing the generator set or transfer switch unless you've got lots of experience in diagnoising semi-conductors and electronic components.
Depending on the age of the system, it would be benificial to have a qualified service tech take a look at it.
As an electrician, I've installed several back up generator sets in homes for customers and have had a few of these automatic transfer switches with intermittent operation issues. Sometimes it's the switch and other times it's the Generator that is causing the problems.
Hope this helps, and best regards!
The relay protection trips, the internal or external short-circuit fault of the generator set causes the relay protection action to trip, the generator trips due to demagnetization or water cut, and the thermal protection system fails, and the thermal system failure is caused by the parallel action Tripping.
The cause of generator overspeed is generally due to the oil pump issuance or the electronic actuator is stuck, causing the throttle to open to the maximum position.
