Shuts down with DVD-RW installed, works fine without

I have a zd8000 that works fine without any DVD-RW drive installed. If the drive is in then it has a few intermittent problems. It will shut down unexpectedly, blue screens (different errors with and without mem dumps, including a HARD ERROR), and sometimes won't see the HD at all. Tried with 2 different DVD drives. First drive the power light would blink constantly when laptop turned on. Second drive worked fine the first few times booting but then it went out completely and would not get any power and the laptop started having the same issues listed above. Remove the drive completely and it works just fine.

I believe there is a short associated with the optical drive connection. Any ideas on how to fix this besides swapping the entire motherboard? The cheapest I've seen it is for $400 and this is the 2nd board in 2.5 years.

If not a short then any ideas what the issue could be?

Since the hardware route is expensive, have you tried to upgrade the software/drivers for the drive?

It looks like there's an incompatibility between the software, OS and hardware.

Hope this helps :) Kindly leave a rating. Thanks..

I have a hp pavilion zd8000 laptop and it wont read that it has a dvd-rw anymore. WHY?

your laser is faulty or durty
you have to clean the lens if this not helps you must replace the laser
then it is better to replace the completen DVD-RW station
A universal DVD-RW station will fit in the ZD8000 you only have to switch the adaptor inside.

I can burn cd's but not dvd's

Hello Rfd832,
What I see from the description is that the drive is a combo drive. Combo drives are CD-RW and DVD-ROM drives means
CD-RW = Compact Disk-Read Write
DVD-ROM = Digital Versatile Disk - Read Only Memory
so these drives can read and write CDs but can only read DVDs (Cannot write or burn DVDs)
If you want to be able to burn DVDs then you need to have DVD RW drive (either DVD+RW or DVD-RW)

You said that you are able to burn DVDs on other computer so please check the label on the DVD drive.. it should be DVD-RW/DVD+RW drive

Hope that helps.. :)

Thanks and Regards,
Srinivas

I also have the HP ZD8000 and mine as become a semi-mobile laptop as it only works with the power cord and I have multiple lines on my screen. Sof fare my keyboard appears to be fine. The other item I did...

Several problems here.

#1. You probably need to replace the battery. They do not last forever.

#2. The lines in the LCD screen indicate to me that the LCD panel needs to be replaced.

#3. Are you positive that you have a DVD/RW, or is it a CD/RW-DVD rom?

Good luck.

PC shuts down on Asus P5sd2-vm with LG DVD Rw (GH22NS30)

If you are sure that it works with other DVD drives, then I cannot help.

But if a system shuts down suddenly, the first thing I would check would be the CPU temp. At around 97 degrees, Intel processors shutdown to protect from excessive heat. Go into the setup (some call it BIOS) and check cpu temp.

If that's not the problem, then you should consider things like drivers problems, virus infection, broken hardware, compatibility issues. Try to search technet site at microsoft for a similar problem.

Good Luck!

DVD RW Drive

Vista sucks. However, delete your drive and change the IDE cable. Also, put the drive onto another IDE channel so it re-initializes your drive - winodws data bases a drive when it has more than 5 DMA errors and clocks its speed down to PIO - very slow
