Does the washer agitate while in wash cycle? Does it move at all? It may be that the motor that drives the spin and wash cycle is not working. If it smells funny, it usually means that you have bearings gone bad or a belt, if it is belt drive, broken. You can replace these parts. All the parts involved with spinning can be replaced. The parts are available from the maker. It may be a spin clutch, agitator gear, pulley, or a transfer case..

SOURCE: Spin cylcle not working. Makes a funny sound and does not spin

There is a part called the Wig Wag. It is 2 solenoids on a metal bar about 6 inches long. It has a hole in the center of the bar and 3 electrical wires go up through the center. One is a common wire and the other two go to each selenoid. One selenoide when activated causes the WIG WAG to shift the Transmission into WASH MODE or SPIN MODE. They are powered by 115 VOLTS AC and is enough to KILL YOU.

What you will find is the 3 wires are held together by a few wraps of electrical tape. Because the WIG WAG moves while the machine is running, the wires are all the time FLEXING. Eventually a wire will break and in this case it was the SPIN Wire to the SPIN solenoid.

Replacing all 3 wires is the best fix. Splicing near the wig wag could cause the wires to break again, They could then pinch or touch the moving metal parts and if the washer is NOT properly GROUNDED someone could get ELECTROCUTED and KILLED.

USE CAUTION doing this repair. The replacemet wire needs to be FINE Grain Flexable wire. If you use something like Lamp Cord that is not designed to be flexed hundreds of times will soon break.

Check with Sears Parts and ask for a Wig Wag Wire Harness.

You can lay the machine on it's back and see this problem. Caution plugging it in on it;s back, something could break.

The Wig Wag can take your fingers off..... CAREFUL !!!!

Do this repair at your own risk. It is dangerous.

At least you will know what to tell the Repairman.

SOURCE: washer makes alot of noise

If the sound your hearing is a " roar " , then its the spin bearings bad and the smell could be the motor , working harder due to the bearing . Eventually , this bearing will wear enough , you'll start seeing water on the floor , gradually more and more . I would suggest you start looking for another washer , due to the cost of replacing the bearings and seal kit .

Washer make noise doing spin cycle smell smoke make the power cord warm to touch

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome to the site Joe. Usually, if a washer makes noises during spinning, it means the drive basket is broken. Make sure your pulley's are not sticking and rubbing the belt. This causes the basket to be unstable during the spin cycle. As far as the smell of smoke, try checking the belt and make sure it is not worn or loose. Inspect the motor to check for noises, grinding, or smoke. Your transmission may be burning up. Usually, the cord will remain warm, but not hot. The washer may be working extra if a belt is sticking or during the spinning process. If you have any other questions Joe, just let me know. Thanks for using FixYa.

Shorting out when you turn the dial on front ,was making funny noise the other day too

Please post a model number. What do you mean by 'shorting out'? Was there a pop, or spark, smoke, or burning smell? What was the funny noise? A hum, a clanking, a squeal? And what area of the machine did it come from? Does the machine agitate, spin, or fill? Thanks.

Panasonic MC-CL673 vacuum is not getting up to speed and smells

Even though the brush is spinning, you probably need to replace the belt2_bing.gif because it is stretched. It is probably slipping on the beater bar. This is causing the smell (burning rubber). I don't believe it is your motor. :-)

Whirlpool AWM6120 Front Load Washer

Cleaning depends on use. 8 years is a bit over the top! When your water does not drain, check the outlet filter first, then the pipe from below the tub to the filter. Your washer wont spin 'cause the pump/filter is blocked.
