SOURCE: Rinnai 24 water heating system

Hi,
First question.... when has the heater been cleaned last???

These heaters need to be cleaned.... the manufacuturer recommends yearly....
Check the recommendations in the manual...

Usually I use Muratic acid....but vinegar can work also...
Make sure to isolate the heater from the rest of the system first...

Cleaning often will make the difference between a heater working or not working..

I have main combi 24 if you run water slow it is hot but if you turn it up it is luke warm water

see pic;

Notice the red in the 1st picture? That is all hot water. When you have a broken dip tube the cold water is 3/4 of the water heater.

So like in your case, if you run water slower you may get hotter water longer, but if you run at faster rate, hot water short time and then cold.

Check & if needed replace the dip tube. Easy fix

Low water pressure

Hi Bob,

You can determine if the tank is the problem by connecting a garden hose to the drain that is provided on most water heaters. Before doing this, be sure to shut of the electrical supply to the heater - otherwise you can damage heating elements if an electric type or waste fuel by heating an empty tank if a gas / propane fired type.

If you get a slow flow out of this drain, it means that somewhere in the cold water supply side to / in the tank - there is a problem. Inside the tank, the cold water is delivered by a "dip tube" that distributes the cold water to the bottom in the tank. Dip tubes are used in both electric and gas / propane fueled heaters. Here's a cut away view of a typical tank:

6_29_2012_9_57_32_pm.jpg

If the tube is clogged, or there is build up, scale or debris in the supply (cold water) side of the heater, flow rates will suffer. Likewise, if there is a problem with the output of the tank, it will directly affect flow as well.

If you get a good flow rate from the drain, then the issue is going to be on the hot water output side of the heater. Again, the same build up, scale, debris issues on the hot water out put pipe will cause problems with flow. Typcial tanks do not have dip tubes for the hot water side of the tank - as taking hot water from the top of the tank is most desireable and is furthest away from the cold water that rushes in to make up the hot hot water going out.

There's nothing really in the tank itself that can cause issues with flow outside of the dip tube, and piping to and from the tank.

Good luck!

Indoor tankless 74-pvn. power went off and has returned. get error code 24 when try to power on

Open following links for Rheem troubleshooting resources, including Rheem chat, error codes, and possible manual.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Troubleshoot-Rheem-Tankless-water-heater.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Tankless-maintenance.pdf

Error codes are considered start-point for troubleshoot.
Error code 24 is malfunction of operational switch: press max or min button on PC board to reset, -or- replace PC board.
Max-min button is sometimes located above dip switches, and can be 1 button that is rotated with screwdriver or 2 separate buttons. Look at wiring diagram in manual that came with product.

Fix most tankless problems yourself, same day, for $330.

I'm getting hot water for 2 minutes , then it gets cold

Most electric hot water heaters have two thermostats, one near the top of the tank and one near the bottom, and are covered by removable metal cover plates. The thermostats are pressed firmly against the bare metal wall of the hot water heaters tank.

The top thermostat usually has a high limit switch that will trip if the water gets too hot. When it trips it shuts off the electricity to both the upper and lower heating elements.

To reset the high limit switch there is usually a red button that you must press. When the upper limit switch trips it is often an indication that something else has gone wrong with the heater.

When the top of the tank is hot the upper thermostat removes power from the upper heating element and transfers the power to the lower thermostat and heating element. If the lower thermostat is defective, then the lower portion of the tank will not be heated and the supply will be greatly reduced.
Check for power at the upper thermostat terminals where the power is sent to the lower thermostat and heating element. If there is no power then the upper thermostat should be replaced. If there is power then check for power at the lower heating element. If there is no power at the lower heating element then replace the lower thermostat.
If there is power to the lower heating element then it should be getting hot. If it is not, replace it. Another possibility is a broken dip tube. Check for a broken dip tube and replace if necessary.

Hope this helps out

30 galons gas direct fired water heater.\r\nI get hot water for 2 minutes, then water gets cold

Hi,
The dip tube on the cold water side either is not there or it is broken off then the cold water stays on the top and gives cold water quickly...

If this is a new installation then check that the piping is correct and that the cold and hot pipes are not switched...

My Rheem Tankless Hot Water Heater is installed, but is it not attempting to start. The digital display keeps blinking 82, 0, 82 , 0 ...?

If this is a new board and Altidude chip with power on set dip switch 1 and 2 to on. Then press and hold adjust button until on board blinks fast then and you will see dashes on LCD display. Set dip switches 1 and 2 back to off. Turn on remote unit and you should see 100F. With any luck you are good to go.
