Question about Televison & Video
What is the model number? Try resetting the TV to factory settings in the menu, or reinstalling the firmware for that model.

I called Hitachi and the solution is in your cable remote not your tv remote. Your tv has a aspect menu as does your cable remote. Based on your cable provider you should have a settings or menu button to change the zoom or aspect of your screen. I had the same problem and have Comcast as cable and this worked for me.

SOURCE: cannot change aspect ratio
If you are connected to a HD cable or satellite box, the aspect ratio is set by that box. If it is set for 1080i 16:9 wide screen mode then your TV is locked at that ratio. This is good considering you have a Hi-Scan 1080i television in the Sony KP57HW40. Please take a moment to rate my answer. Thanks...

SOURCE: The aspect on my tv
cableboxes also have aspect ratio setting set your tv to 16:9 and try another source like a blu ray player or video game console with hd capabilities
