SOURCE: My Rinnai R85 heater will not heat; it is leaking

I just fixed a leaky R85. Fortunately it's the bypass valve, not the heat exchanger. Did your heater freeze up in this snow storm? Unplug the power, open the cover and see where it leaks. If water comes from the top, means crack on the heat exchanger, then it would be too costly to replace. If you can see the water gushing out of a valve, on the bottom of the heater, then it's an easy fix. The valve is fixable, you don't have to replace it. But still need to find out what causes the flame fail (error 12). I suspect the igniter got wet, dry it with a towel after you take out the valve. Removing the fan first will give you more room to work inside.

SOURCE: have a reliance electric water heater model 606; have no hot water. I am having a problem finding the reset switch.

If it was working and recently stopped working, the heating element that heats the water probably went bad, no longer functioning. Check to make sure that there is or is not a reset button, and if there is, press and reset the heater. It's not difficult to remove the old heater element and replace it, but make sure the circuit breaker power to the water heater is off when you remove it. Take it to a water heating supply store, or large hardware store with the Brand and model number of your water heater (Reliance RELIANCE ELECTRIC WATER HEATER,model 606 ) to buy another one.

SOURCE: Rheem 50 gallon Electric Water Heater 81V52D C repair ideas needed

It could be element shorted to ground through steel tank, so don't touch tank when breaker is ON.
Or you have undersized 12 gauge wire and 20 amp breaker and the heat has loosened breaker on the busbar. Breaker trips when heat exceeds breaker limit. Jiggle breaker and listen for crackling sound.

To restore hot water now:
Turn off circuit breaker, and open top cover then Push in reset button on top of heater to restore functionality. Put back insulation and factory cover.
To fix water heater: test and replace bad element.

I have a Rinnai R85 water heater and my temperature controller doesn't have any power.

You will only get power out of the controller when there is a call for hot water. If you have power into the controller, and you still get no power out when there is a demand, then the controller is bad and must be replaced.

Richmond hot water heater

Turn off the power at the fuse box (circuit Breaker Box) relative to the Water Heater. Allow for a few minutes rest and flip the breaker back on again. Go to the Heater and check it again. If it works ok, you good to go. If the same problem exists, then the controller board to the heater is either defective or the limiting switch has been compromised. Before getting a professional to test it, contact Richmond directly and see if they have a fix.

Rinnai R85 starts to warm then stops and blinks 61??

I went to the Rinnai website and this is what I found for error code 61.
Error Code 61 Problem: Fan failure
Solution: Measure the resistance on the fan motor, check the damaged or loose wiring and connections. Make sure that the fan spins freely.
Sounds like either your fan is broken or something is keeping it from spinning freely.
Hope this helps.

I just put in 2 new breakers in mybreaker box mystove works but not my hot water heater. Imay havegotten my breakers mixed up does a hot water heater take a 15 or 30 size breaker????

They both take a 30Amp breaker or fuse as they are fed off of the 220V. They both have demands above 20Amps when they are fully used. in particular the hot water heater has a fast recovery mode in which both cal rods are heating at the same time.

No hot water. Circuit breaker not the problem. Which plate do I open to check the eco?

Remove access panels on water heater's side the top thermostat has a red reset button on it.
Press reset button and it will take about 30 mins or more to get hot water. If you have a meter or test light check wires to elements for power.

This would be the first thing to check on the water heater.

My hot water isnt working and i need to know if the pilots go off on an electric water heater like gas if so how do i re lite the water heater

  1. if your hot water heater is electric there is no open flame or pilot light. They have electric heating coils, normally they are 220 volts.Follow the metal conduit up and back to the box check the breakers there will be two of them in for the hot water heater if it is 220 there will be only one fuse/breaker if it is 110. Check to see that they are on.
