I have a problem with alternate lines not printing when I send a document to the printer but not when I copy from the glass platen. But the copy quality sucks anyway and it wasn't like this in the past. I have auto aligned the heads, checked the nozzles and done a clean to no avail. When I did align heads it didn't print the full number so I did an auto align since I didn't know how to align them manually.

I had the same problem with the ADF. Thin line vertically down the paper when I copied using this option. I thoroughly cleaned the rollers, glass, etc. of the ADF with alcohol and now it works great! Thank you for your help!

I tried the other solutions listed here - and no luck. After cleaning the inside of the ADF, like the manual suggested - no change. How are you supposed to do that anyway? Deep cleaning the inside of the machine also has nothing to do with it.

I finally figured out why things that I copied with the ADF had lines/marks on them, but those placed directly on the platen (big glass) were fine. When you copy with the ADF, the copy is not being made from the large glass area. Rather, there is a thin glass area right next to it.

Turns out, there were a couple of smudges (goo) on that thin piece of glass which were creating long vertical lines down every sheet. Cleaned the glass - problem solved!

Gosh, I hope this helps someone else save some time, and frustration.

thanks, it helps very much. it cost me a whole day to figure this out, after following your suggestions it works great. yeah, looks like its the small screen next to flat bed that needs to be cleaned up.

    thanks anyway.

Same problem with my Canon MF4150. One vertical line when using the ADF only. I just followed the Manuel and it worked! Lift up the ADF cover. Use a damped cloth to clean the whole area including the rollers. One of the rollers which causes it is little hard to get to but make sure you get it. wipe all the grooves just in case. It worked perfect.

RUN A FEW DEEP CLEANING, if that dont work remove the ink well and clean it manually, you can eighter submerge it in rubbing alcohol for a few minutes then blow out the ink well (the passage where the ink flows through or you can boil it in rubbing alcohol

I am scanning a photo. I have translucent lines running horizontal through the picture before i print it.

Documents scanned/copied from the document feeder pass over a thin glass area where scanning occurs. Clean this area if sent faxes, copies or scans have black or white vertical lines.
  1. Lift the document cover to expose the platen glass.

  2. Wipe the ADF scan area (C) with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth moistened with water.

  3. Then wipe with a clean, soft, dry, lint-free cloth making sure there are no residues left, especially on the platen glass.

  4. Close the document cover and make a copy of a text document to confirm the black line has disappeared.

When I make a photocopy I get a dark vertical line down the page. In fact, now I get two dark lines. It has something to do with the scanner, because it happens when I send someone a fax as well. ...

Do you use the automatic document feeder (ADF) when you photocopy and fax? Do you use the platen (lift the cover up) when you scan a document? If so, you probably have some dirt or foreign material in the ADF scanner area, which is a thin glass area to the left of the glass platen. Clean this area with a damp cloth and dry it before trying again. There is a plastic strip covering this area, and if this is scratched it can be removed and replaced.

I have a Canon Pixma MP780, keep getting "clear ADF" messages. changed the settings to off. Also, scanner is giving me some error messages #2, #178

Try Canon support. Type your query. Click "Search"
Example: Type "clear ADF" (You may have paper or some obstruction in the Auto Document Feeder).

Verical line(s) problem with canon mp780

Hi Nick, It's ONLY when you copy? I start by cleaning the platen glass. Wipe the Platen Glass with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth moistened with water. Then wipe with a clean, soft, dry, lint-free cloth making sure not to leave any residue, especially on the Platen Glass. If you have trouble getting the scanning area clean, wipe with diluted mild detergent (for dish washing). Do the same thing for the white area under the platen lid. If this does not resolve the problem let me know. His Dudeness
