I recently had a HD crash and have replaced it with another HD using the same Windows XP OS. While trying to reload programs that were on the old HD to the replacement, some of the programs get this error message: C:windowssystem32autoexec.nt. This system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows Applications. How can I repair or replace this file so that I can load the programs?

This sounds to me to be one of two things. Either your HD is not connected to the motherboard or your HD has crashed.

Step one is to open your tower and make sure the HD is connected to the motherboard.
Step two (if step one has been resolved) Replace the HD this will require you to reload your Operating System.(XP,Visat,Windows 7)
Step three once the New HD has been replaces and the Operating System loaded you can make the old HD a slave drive (second on the daisy chain) and copy the data from the old to the new HD.

there is no other way to get the VIRUS magnet XP clean.

You don't say exactly at what point in the boot sequence the system crashed and restarts. Many things could be at work here. You say you are using the HDD from the previous system. Did you swap this drive straight out and are still using the OS load from the previous system? Windows loads drivers at startup based upon the hardware installed. If you are using and old WIndows load with a new mainboard, this could be the entire cause of your crashes. YOu may be able to get to SAGE mode and remove the old drivers and try to restart the system, but from experience I will tell you that to get the best results when installing a new mainboard, you should reload the OS from the original OS disk, and then load the new mainboard drivers.

check the HD if its properly inserted,if the old one is working before then the new one you bought my be a damage one. try to replace another HD to see if which HD is working or not.

when saving files from any OS two methods come to mind 1. using windows to back up files . and 2. using
a redundant static drive ( a HD without an OS installed
or an external HD without an OS installed ) , since you used windows to back up your files you'll have to find them in Documents , they will be listed as the old user IE ; "Tom's Computer" if you didn't use the same user name ( name of computer ) you'll find it tricky to
apply the old data to the new OS , note that some programs wont work with windows 7 if 64 bit because the drivers that run the programs will not install into
windows 7 , most manufacturers are hurrying to update the drivers to windows 7 since 7 is no long in its infancy .

This error comes when your motherbord not read properly harddrive.
for that first reconnect both connection to harddisk.Power cable and ide or sata cable.
Change SATA or IDE cable then check.
Pull cmos cell from motherbord for 10 minutes so all settings are factory defaults.
Then when you power up the computer press F1 or F2 or "del" key then you can see bios screen.
Make sure hardddrive detect in bios.
Set first boot device as harddrive.
Then check.

is the hard drive showing in bios? you may have a hd too large for the bios to read. has it been fdisked or formatted?how large was the od hd? was it the same type hd? either way when you reload the operating system you will need a disk. post back and let me know, i will try and help. just the info you gave is not enough to attempt repair.

have you tried using "LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION"?When you first turn it on keep hitting "F8",use the arrow keys to go to last known good configuration then click enter.If it does do the same thing you can reload OS without losing all data,dont partition or format just reload OS but some third party programs wont work because files are loaded into the windows folder.You would have to reload third party programs.

Check out any hardware that doesnot supports windows xp. remove that and reload the os. it works. or remove all the additional addon cards like modem, network card, printers etc., (just maintain only hard disk, cd rom and floppy drive)then install the os. once os installs add the components one by one to so that the os will detect one by one cheers!
