Reducing engine speed on lawnboy 10685.

Replaced carb, air filter, and spark plug. Started right up but running fast and loud. What have I done?

Its the govenor. Don't run it till you fix. Carb spring goes to freely pivoting vane around flywheel or spring goes to a a bracket

you need to find out whether it is a fuel or ignition problem, I might suggest that when it quits pull spark plug and ground it to head and pull the rope like you are starting and see if you have spark, if no spark, then I would say your coil is bad, once it gets warm, it quits.....good luck

Why does it keep turning off after a few secs.
Sounds like its a fueling issue, or there lack of.. When your hand is over it you're restricting the air flow and the engine is receiving the right amount of air to fuel.. But with the filter on, its drawing too much air for the amount of fuel its getting.. Check the fuel lines, fuel filter, and carb settings if it has any tuning screws. If its a float type, make sure the needle valve isn't sticking.

REMOVE THE SPARK PLUG, RECONNECT THE CABLE AND WHILE THE SPARK PLUG IS RESTING ON THE BLOC OPERATE THE STARTING PROCEDURE AND SEE IF THE PLUG IS SPARKING.

Engine started fine earlier this spring. Now engine will start but dies instantly. Have replaced spark plug and fuel filter. Suggestions???
Definatly a fuel problem. Start by removeing the air filter Will it run?? Spray in carb. where air filter sets. Will it run?? Keep blowing carb. gleaner in carb as it runs.. If this doesn't correct the problem Clean the carberator.

I have a 1987 commercial lawnboy walk behind mower that has stopped running. I gradually lost power over the summer and now it will not start. I have installed a new plug and filter earlier in the spring....
I would try and remove carb and clean it thuroughly. You can soak the parts in solvent or equivelant. The carb would be right after the air filter tube to the intake of engine.

Have a 20 HP twin cylinder KOHLER engine on CRAFTSMAN mower.
If you are able...have someone do a compression check on the engine. Usually if a mower is loosing power and it is a twin cylinder engine, one of the headgaskets may be blown.

My mtd tradesman lawn mower does not run smooth. where is the idle mixture adj. screw? the engine is the tecumseh 5.5 hp model #VLV55 501029A(D)
The newer machines do not have a way for you to adjust the Idle, what you can do is change the spark plug or spray some carb cleaner or remove the air filter and run it for a few minutes without the air filter and see what happens
