SOURCE: kenwood kdc-w3041 protect mode
Hello ia737,
The "protect" display is probably being caused by a shorted or grounded (touching vehicle chassis or other ground) speaker wire. Check the speaker wires for bare spots, etc and insulate or replace as necessary.
You do not need to remove the fuses to force a "cold reset" of the W-3041. You can simply press the "reset" button on the front of the unit. It's the little recessed button at the lower left of the volume control. Use the straightened end of a paper clip or ballpoint pen to momentarily hold the button in.
Hope this helps.

Make sure that the source is set to "Standby" when trying to access the menu. It took me about an hour to figure it out and afterward I felt like a ******.
