SOURCE: Free wiring diagram for 1978 Mercury Outboard 115 HP boat motor

I have a maintainance manual for this engine (I have the same one) with pages of wiring diagrams. What specific system/area are you interested in, I could scan in the page(s) and email them to you.

SOURCE: i have a yamaha 2

On the tachometer back you have secured a wire thread just like the one from the brakes of a bicycle. The other end of the wire is secure to the engine. This wire complete, need to be replaced.

As a test first disconnect it from the tachometer and see if ok if not then the problem is with tachometer.

Trying to find the compression on Mercury Bigfoot 60 hP outboard motor

When checking the compression on an outboard motor... you aren't looking for the final number as much as the percentages of variation. There are so many things that can vary the compression numbers, like throttle position, air temperature, and even the tilt of the motor on a four stroke, that the manufacturers don't put the numbers out. What you are looking for is less than 10% variation between all cylinders. So if 3 cylinders are giving you 120 psi and the forth cylinder is giving you 105 psi, that hole has a problem. In the old 2 stroke days what we would find is people were using air cooled 2 stoke oil, which has a much higher burn temperature, and fouling the piston rings with tar.

How do I set timing?

I don't think mercury has changed their engines much in the past few decades with the exception of the newer high tech & 4-strokes. You can probably get the procedure from a shop manual that covers their 2-stroke 65hp from the 90's or later. The easy part is that with it being a 2-stroke there will only be 1 top dead center as opposed to a 4-stoke which appears to have 2 until you figure out if the rotor is pointed 180 degrees the wrong way. The only other thing you need to know is which cylinder is #1. Bring that cylinder all the way up. The markings will be on the fly wheel and the engine block. What's left... a few degree before or after. You should be able to get it going with some trial & error & maybe fine tune it by ear. I did this with a Mercruiser & found out I had it perfect 5 years later when I got the shop manual. Good luck.
