The microwave will turn on but will not heat and it starts to smell like an electrical fire

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

The cost of a service call and or fix would be more than buying a new one.

HI, normally, when you smell the burning electrical wires and board components, this will confirm a major capacitor malfunction. in this case, all electronic component will be fried or destroyed. these parts are the running diode, magnetron tube,cut-off fuse, noise filter and control board as well. all these parts will be costly to replaced, and it will be more cost effective to just cut your loss and purchase a new unit. the newer unit will be cheaper than the actual repair bill in this case.

My microwave was smelling like electrical wire burning specially when I was heating liquids in it. Suddenly it completely went off... Is it fixable or I should change it?

If you smelled burning electrical wire, I would definitely replace the unit.
An attempt to repair would probably cost way more than a new microwave!

Microwave does not "heat" and smells when turned on.

calling the company will be the best suggestion because if the smell is like burning plastic, it will be a problem electrically

I have aproblem i tried to heat somthing but the microwave starting for 2 second and stoped

Either you have a bad inverter (most likely), or else you have a bad magnetron tube (and there is a possibility you may have both parts bad, in which case it's time to go buy a new microwave oven).

When I turn on the micowave; smell somthing burning

The magnetron (the part that heats the food) may be ready to burn out. If you smell the burning, you should then unplug the microwave, open it up and see if you can determine for sure that it is coming from that part. Unfortunately even if I am right, it is almost more cost effective to just replace the microwave rather than replace that part. You can run this microwave till it dies if you want, but I would be ready with a new one.

Let me know how this works out for you.

Daewoo kor-861h, electrical smell and will not heat.

Turn if off, and leave it alone, remove it, if you can remove the unit, take it in for service, something is wrong if you smell electrical, most people for some reason can smell and identify correctly electrical or at least insulation burning smells, which means something is burning internally, not safe, fire hazard, unit needs to be repaired by qualified technician or replaced with new unit, take no chances, nothing you can do to repair this, could be a shorting transformer, or shorting power cables, but to attempt to trouble shoot this with email is a long shot, and depends on your experience expertize and testing equipment.

I wish I could give you a short easy answer, but the hazard and your safety is more important than a microwave.

My GE spacemaker microwave won't heat and makes an unusual sound

I have the same problem on my oven- model JVM1640WB and called an appliance repairman who is honest and reliable (I've used him before). He said the problem is with the electrode, to fix it is roughly $300. He recommended buying a new microwave rather than fixing it.

It makes a weird noise and a it smells like something burning and does not heat up

Is it a sharp by chance? If it is,alot of these units have a habbit of burning up the magnetrons(microwave producing device). It would cost more to fix than buy a new one.

Burning odor, no heat

A burning smell along with a different sound (growl) USUALLY indicates a breakdown in the High Voltage Side. This is not a direct short (short circuit) or the line fuse would have blown shutting everything down. The High Voltage Side is made up of-- The Secondary ,or High Voltage Side of The High Voltage Transformer, A High Voltage Diode, A High Voltage Capacitor, and The Magnetron. If The High Voltage Transformer is the problem it will smell like a florescent light ballast burning, and will smell each time you turn on the MW. A HV Diode burns and opens, thus no more smell. A HV Capacitor usually does not burn nor does the Magnetron. There is no Cheap-Fix unless you can see that the HV Diode is burned into and you can get to it to replace. CAUTION: Always unplug from power before attempting to repair. NOTE: If you replace a Diode make sure it goes back in the same direction it came out. Yes there is a front and back.
