If your console has recently fell or has had equivalent damage recently the track in which the disk tray glides in/out could be misaligned causing the laser disk reader to make contact with your games/cds causing the scratches you are seeing you can take it apart relatively simply I have fixed several like that back in the day took about 45 min. Otherwise you can have it fixed but I would suggest purchasing a used or reconditioned console if the repair is around or more than a replacement. hope this helps

If it has just dirt and minor scratches, you can use a soft cloth to clean it. Start from the center going to the edges of the disk. Don't wipe it in circular motion.
You should also try cleaning the lens of your PS2 by using any CD lens cleaner available in any computer or CD/DVD shops.
Although the PS3 is becoming popular, many of us decided to stay with the PS2. There are more games, cheaper products, and more buying opportunities. Hey, you can even download PS2 games on the Internet. Of course, these games will get a lot of use (because they are awesome!) And finally, you want to know how to fix scratched PS2 games. This article will help you.

Is it merely scratched or dirty?

Sometimes the problem is not our game from scratch. 1.u can change the wire( or) 2.hold or bend the wire in opposite direction so that it doesn't peek up, more curve it will touch the dvd u play and scratch
usually within the ps2 and xbox they will produce a circular ring around the disc which means the laser is going bad and will eventually need replacing.... the only way to remove the circular scratch is to have the game resurfaced but its just gonna keep doing that untill you replace the laser!
Check the bottom of the disc it may be dirty or scratched. If its dirty then clean it with rubbing alcohol, if scratched you'll have to buy a scratch remover.
Yes I see your problem!
1)Did You Drop the ps2 at all?
2)Maybe Your using the wrong disk...(like old ps1 or copied ps2 games)
3)Maybe it just stopped working...if You got it recently go get it exchanged or fixed(check the warranty)...
4)if it doesnt turn on then its most likely broken or messed up...
5)if the game doesnt work it may be scratched or need to be cleaned
6)clean the ps2!get a computer/game console sprayer...
7)they also have cd cleaning devices that get rid of the scratches (not too big or long though)
Try wiping the disks in a circular motion with a cotton t-shirt, tissue or cleaning cloth, then try again. If it still doesn't work, try a PS2 game. If it works, try another PS1 game. If the other PS1 game doesn't work, the PS1 part of your PS2 system may be broken. Your PS2 has, inside of it, a miniaturized PS1. If that mini-PS1 breaks, you can't play PS1 games. If the PS2 game doesn't work, you probably need a lens repair. If the other PS1 game works, then your games are defective and you should get new ones.
The ps2 is Slim? it often when the ribbon cable of laser lens have lift up more than laser lens. you need replacement with new ribbon If you are inclined to open the system and it is out of warrenty you can do so. or you may consoder sending it back to Sony for repair. hope this helps.
